Interesting Attempt to Stage Hamlet Without the Dane
By Kevin M. Derby
"The Outsiders" faced a problem when the powers that be decided to remove Bruce Wayne from the DC stage for a few years. While sales have slipped without Batman's bankable name on the title and face on the cover, the comic is a fairly solid attempt to build a niche and fill a void. "The Deep" has an interesting plot but it is helped by having some of the leading DC villains. I'm curious to see if the title will be able to stand on its own. There are 8 heroes in this comic and none really come off as a convincing lead. Batman butler Alfred Pennyworth helps organize the team and really holds the story together. It's a bit unexpected but it works.Veteran Outsider and JLA member Geo-Force tries to lead the team which also contains the solemn Katana, the perky Halo, the lighthearted Metamorpho, the unstable Creeper, the compassionate Black Lightning and a new version of Owlman who is a skilled detective and shows a good deal of promise as a character. The book is not great but it is entertaining and there are the seeds here of something special even without Batman. I'm curious to see if DC can maximize the potential here before sales dry up.

Not Groundbreaking, but a Solid New Direction with Potential
By O Mr. Geppetto
I picked up Outsiders back with the first TPB of this incarnation: Outsiders: Looking for Trouble. I liked that team--even though it was hard to justify its raison d'tre (gods know they tried ...)--so I wasn't thrilled when Batman re-entered the scene. But I rolled with it, seemed like it had potential ... and then, in the "OMGtheycan'tdothat!" event du jour, Batman dies. So now we have yet ANOTHER team, led by ...ALFRED? Oh, right ... he's not just a valet who served as a medic in the army anymore. He's an ex-spy who came in from the cold to become a butler. Uh huh. Why does this sound like the plot of a Steven Seagal movie?
Anyway, each member of Team 3 supposedly represents a trait of Batman's, and despite Metamorpho's comical explanation, I can actually see that (even if they had to invent Owlman to cover the "World's Greatest Detective" aspect.) The set-up is a stretch (Alfred does a Professor X imitation, going around the world to recruit members for his new X-siders ...), but most set-ups are; when the tale really gets going it is interesting, engaging, and for the most part balanced between ideas, action, entertainment and character development. Nothing ground-breaking here, but given the state of superheroes these days, I'll settle for a good solid story with decent art, where you can follow the action and tell who's who in ways OTHER than just the costume.
Owlman deserves special mention: I'm really kinda torn over the character ... I mean, talk about a rip-off: He's a reporter (oh THAT'S original ...)wearing a name and costume stolen from an Earth-2 character (Is there still an Earth-2? I can never keep up ...), only he's not all buff and looks a little puffy in that owl-suit (anyone read "Watchmen"?), and his main talents is he is a detective like Batman, wearing a suit designed and built by ... well, Batman.
But I'm torn, because he's turning out to be the most interesting person on the team. Go figure. My one serious "But ..." is that he seems to have been using that suit all his life, instead of inheriting it days earlier. You'd think there'd be SOME kind of learning curve ...
So, the new and improved Outsiders: Take 3 turns out to be not wholly new and orignal and maybe not improved, but still points them in a new direction that is rife with possibilities. Which, actually, I guess you could've gotten just from reading the title of this review, without having to stomach all my ranting. Sorry about that ...

DC's Outsiders return!
By T. Wheeler
The DC Universe's team of "outsider" super-heroes are back, on the heels of the seeming demise of Batman. Who will be on the team as Batman's faithful Alfred seeks to rebuild the team -- and who is the mysterious Owlman!?
