Standard text for Overeaters Anonymous

It is the standard text for Overeaters Anonymous, and it is well-written. Most serious members of OA will want to purchase it. I bought the Kindle version, and my only complaint is that you aren't given the option of forwarding to particular chapters or pages, as you are in the printed text. This is of importance because at meetings different sections are read aloud & commented on, and to go to these sections you need a page number of chapter number. You can search the text by keyword search, however, and someone with the Kindle version could ask someone else what the first 3 or 4 words are. The search will then find that (or often those) spot(s). It's not that difficult, but it isn't as easy as being able to simply put in a page number and advance to that page.

Legal English in a Law-School 'Nutshell' Approach

This texbook is British-based in content and terminology, and is published by the Cambridge University Press. It includes 15 units divided according to the most common topical areas of law practice, and comes with audio CDs and practice tests. This text is basically exercise-driven, composed primarily of terminology and comprehension exercises including reading, speaking, listening and analyzing activities. The International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) can be taken at the conclusion by passing the related exam. The ILEC certificate is a fine addition to one's CV/resume, in particular for those working with law in non-native English countries. The topic index is rather comprehensive but may not cover the area of law that you practice in, so check before purchasing if you are looking for exercises in your particular area of practice.

I have taught this book in the ILEC course several times, and find the book amazingly clever and succinct. The variety of materials and exercises work together well. The English level is average-to-advanced. For exercises that actually help to cement understanding, it is the best legal English book I've seen. Overall: thorough and very well constructed. There are also a few exercises online that compliment it. One can study it alone, but it is much more fun to take the course - if you can find it offered in your area.

A few weaknesses

My overall impression of the book is positive. However, I would like to mention some of its weaknesses:
1) Terminology is at times inadequately explained.
2) There is sometimes no clear connection between the definition of a term as explained in the chapter and as given in the glossary.
3) Not enough examples of the terms as they would be used in context.

What's more, the accompanying teacher's book is not always useful for clarification of the terminology and the adequate examples of the terms in use are sometimes lacking in depth and breadth.

Based on these weaknesses, do not rely solely on this book for preparation in proficiency in Legal English!
A note to teachers: You will not be able to rely on the teacher's and student's book alone if you wish to be adequately prepared for class!

Randy is the author of Microsoft Office 2013: In Practice and Microsoft Outlook 2010, and he speaks regularly at conferences on the integration of technology into the curriculum. When he is not teaching, he enjoys spending time with his family, cycling, skiing, swimming, and enjoying the California weather and terrain.

Does NOT contain SIMNet access

The book was received very quickly and was in new condition. This product does NOT contain a SIMNet access code, though, so if you need that you'll need to purchase it separately. I mistakenly thought it would come with that code when I ordered it, but on reviewing the product description again, I find that I was wrong. No point deducted from this purchase, as it is just as advertised.

A very satisfied student of Philosophy

As a student of Professor Ney's at the University of Rochester, we used this book immediately after it was published for our Metaphysics class. I was relieved at how this book approached the subject of Metaphysics: thoughtfully, carefully, and assuming nothing. It even has a logic primer at the beginning to get the reader accustomed to first order predicate logic. Professor Ney's penchant for Philosophy of Time is quite apparent in this publication as that chapter is one of the best I have read as an introduction to the topic. The subject later became the topic for my presentation that semester, and this book, with its suggested readings and in depth look at major thinkers in each subject, was indispensable in guiding my research along. Also key to the usefulness of this book are short, concise definitions of important terms and concepts in the margin. This makes reading, for metaphysics neophyte (such as myself), a bit less daunting. Ney has a particular ability to make the subject accessible to the serious student of Philosophy, and I have a feeling that this text will become seminal in broaching the area of study in a good amount of departments. Now, if only the graphics people at Routledge would put a full beard on the David Lewis stick figures, we'd be in business. :)

Excellent introductory text to Metaphysics

Excellent introductory text to Metaphysics. Ney does a brilliant job of explaining some rather deep and obscure topics in easily understandable ways. It probably helps to have taken an introductory philosophy course, but aside from a basic acquaintance with some philosophical terminology, Ney presupposes nothing. There's a whole chapter on the logic needed for the book, along with helpful boxes throughout that give a more in-depth look.
