Good information, slam to defense biomechanics.

This book is a good summary of the available literature for biomechanics accident reconstruction. Where the reviewed literature is often used by defense experts, the author takes personal criticism at the defense experts for using this literature in assessing injury potential. This is done quite often to a point where it is rediculous and quite defamatory. It is obvious from this book that the author has aligned himself with the plaintiff side of low speed collision analysis. I would not recommend this book if your looking for literature on this matter which is impartial.

Hands on advice for health care providers and lawyers

The New England Journal of Medicine wrote a review of the first edition of this book. Here are a few quotes: "Motor Vehicle Collision Injuries is an ambitious book with multiple objectives aimed at multiple audiences with various levels of background knowledge."

"The author has developed a thoughtful, practical guide for physicians in private practice for ranking the severity of neck and back injuries. He describes a fairly detailed physical examination for head injuries and provides a comprehensive discussion of multiple syndromes after trauma to various parts of the body."

This book is a second edition and about twice the size of the first. It is well researched and authored by a dozen or so health care providers and other experts. Provides useful information to use in the clinical and legal settings.

This book is on point with actual occurences in a dynamic enviornment.

I have weighed Dr. Nordhoff's materials in conjuction with my experiences, training, and testing as a collision reconstructionist. The approach taken by Dr. Nordhoff is to address the potential for injury causation in the real-dynamic world. Unlike much literature which aligns to injury defense (see previous 2-star post by a defense "expert"), Dr. Nordhoff remains open minded to the potential for injury (minor to severe) to occur in low to moderate speed collisions.

Much of the reported data in other literature focuses on testing in controlled laboratories, whereas Dr. Nordhoff looks specifically at those issues which can exasperate injury, such as out-of-position occupants and pre-existing conditions.

I would highly recommend this text if you are seeking to determine the potential for injury in the real-world.

This is an accidental book, and surely friends who knew me growing up - and waited as I burst into places late, trailing shoes and socks or a toothbrush - guffawed heartily when they heard I was working on a book about time. It all started with a phone call. I was part of a group of journalists at the Washington Post asked to research why fewer and fewer women under the age of 50 were reading the newspaper. The journalists, all of us women, most of us caretakers of some kind - mothers, guardians for nieces and nephews, daughters of aging parents - figured women were just too busy. After all, we sometimes found it hard to find the uninterrupted time to read the very newspaper we worked for in the swirl of morning craziness. My assignment was to find the time study data to prove how busy women are. Knowing nothing about time research, I googled, "busy women time" and up popped someone by the name of John Robinson, one of the first and most eminent time-use researchers in the world. I called him up, expecting to find easy validation. Instead, he told me women like me had 30 hours of leisure time every week. And thus the journey began.

Fantastic book! The author does a great job of ...

Fantastic book! The author does a great job of mixing anecdotes and research/statistics. Not dry at all. These are subjects that need to be dealt with in our American culture, and she lays them out beautifully. As someone who is not a mother, I was a little concerned that it would be too much directed at mothers when she revealed she herself was a mother, but I was wrong. I have given this to a couple friends, with high hopes of continuing the conversation. It's not a quick read, but it is well worth anyone's time! Man or woman. Parent or not. If you work, have any interaction with families, or are ever stressed, this is for you.

Overall some thought provoking approaches and easy to read

The book covers some interesting themes but with one or two exceptions didn't really follow these through to a logical conclusion and hence what an individual could do to address some of the underlying causes (most of us are not going to move to the Netherlands to experience the Dutch work environment anytime soon). At times it was somewhat disjointed - possibly could have done with more editing. I did like the way the author blended her personal experiences in with some of the research as this gave a real life example that many readers could relate to.

Amazing. A life changer.

What working mum or dad won't recognise themselves in this book, even just a little?

While the opening chapters are pretty grim, they are an effective shake-up of those beliefs about work and parenthood that we aren't even aware of having. This book really made me evaluate where the beliefs come from that keep me running flat out from task to task. I have actually changed parts of my life between starting this book and finishing it - and I'm a lot happier for it.

A. J. Lape has just destroyed me.
Seriously, hands down, the BEST writing I have read in the last YEAR.
There is not a word to describe how of one swoop, she has touched on every emotion. In one night, I was hysterical with both laughter and devastation. And I was not even finished yet. A. J. ‘s books are ALWAYS good, but I actually choked on my spit gasping and giggling at the same time.

Breath of fresh air

I can not honestly remember how I came across reading this series but I remember after reading the first book I needed to get it on paperback.
The whole series is so different from what I normally read but I have to say that this book is in a league of its own.
Darcy Walker is a character that I love. She acts without thinking and can get bored so easily.
On the outside Darcy can come across as having a hard shell but on the inside is a scared and insecure girl. In this book we get to see this vulnerability really show.
There are so many questions answered in this book.
I cried - a lot - with this book. I cried because of what was going on, what Darcy was saying, when Dylan cried. Now let me tell you about Dylan. At the beginning of this entire series I was not his biggest fan. In fact he annoyed the heck out of me because I thought of him as a control freak but after reading this series..... wow. I wanted to give him a hug and tell him everything will be okay.I wanted to hug Darcy and tell her not to worry and that she is a brave girl.
Ivy I wanted to shake. Seriously the girl annoys me but this book made me pity her.
Jagger made me think ooooo scary.
Ben.... well Ben.... what a fantastic character.
This series is truly one of the best series I have read in my lifetime. The author seems to have poured her heart and soul into this book and after every book I always wonder how she could top the last. This book was no exception.
Honestly I am sitting here now, after reading it, and wondering what to do next.
Darcy's world is truly a place you want to be part of. You can easily get lost in her world.
Thank you A.J Lape for this fantastic series. I series that I don't want to end and a series I would love to see as a movie.

Darcy really took me for a ride in this one!

As all of the other books, I freaking heart Darcy! I am not going to give my full review right now... That will come during the blog tour... but I will give you some of my thoughts right now.
This book, like the others, are super funny. Unlike the other books, it also ripped my heart at in parts. Literally ripped my heart out. I was not expecting tears, other than joyous ones, in this book.
I love that AJ uses her imagination. You not only feel like you are inside Darcy's brain, but you are able to feel like you are Darcy. You find yourself lost in her thoughts and actions.
I think the thing I love about this series the most is that these are books that not only can I enjoy, but my children also. Between the kid-friendly content and the extensive imagination that takes you to places beyond reality (which is what a book is supposed to do), this series is a winner all of the way around!

AJ Lape has brought many laughs and giggles with the first three books in this series. She did the same in this book, however she throw a cookie at me in this one. She drenched me in hot coffee and burned me with some series tears too! I was not expected the tears. The sadness and pity I felt for Darcy in this book is extremely heavy.

This book isn't like the other books. Sure, there are dead bodies falling out of walls. Sure there is Darcy's brothers coming to her aid. And yes, Dylan. What I didn't expect was not only the depths of the back-story of Darcy's mother, but I didn't expect things to go to where they went.

The second half of this book ripped my heart out. I sobbed like a baby, true story. I had to force myself to read it because it was so heavy. I was afraid of where AJ was going to take Darcy. I wanted to read it with my eyes closed... But that wasn't possible. I cringed a lot. I prayed a lot that no harm came to Darcy. To say this book shocked me is an understatement!

This book isn't all serious. We have Bean and some twerking. We have cheating girlfriends. Darcy attracts more male suiters. Darcy questions her relationship with Dylan to the point she drives him even more crazy. There is the "usual" plus more seriousness than we have yet to have.

Oh, I can't forget... Dodge Charger man... We finally get our answers. Yes, you read that right!!!

If you haven't started this series, you really should. The best part of this series, aside from the laughs, is that it is marketable for ALL ages. This is something your twelve year old can read and enjoy; it is something any adult can read and enjoy. You don't come across many books or series that are perfect for all age groups!

Cute Journal!

This is such a beautiful journal. I am very pleased with my purchase. It has room to write your thoughts and feelings down and a few pages to color too. The only thing is I wish there were more pages to color, but for the price, it is a perfect journal. It would also make a nice gift for that young person in your life, or adult. I bought it for myself and it's a nice journal that I can use for my 'color' therapy and journal at the same time!

I really enjoyed the research Elder Lund did for this book so I didn't have to. He used mostly general authority quotes and scripture to make his points. It was recommended by many others and I would recommend it as well.

The Coming of the Lord

This may not be one of the most entertaining books one will read, but it will be one of the most valuable. As always, Gerald N. Lund's research is impeccable, fact-based and unimpeachable. His writing style is eminently readable and absorbable. If one, of any religion or persuasion, will read and heed the facts and events chronicled in this compilation it will be most helpful in understanding today and preparing for tomorrow. It will lend enlightenment and the comfort that comes with being preparing for what is transpiring in the world.

Significant reading

I first read this work in 1985 and found it to be a book that I would never forget. There is an amazing sense of inevetibility in the prophesies of the Lord's servants concerning the second coming of Christ. That spirit permeates this work based extensively in prophesy. It is not bogged down with personal interpretations and inuendo. Nor does it falter on supposition. I love this man's unadulterated honesty as he maticulously creates a pallet converging past, present and future. This is a timeless delight to ponder. This is a great book to pray over. You will find yourself reaching for your scriptures over and over until they become an integral part of your faithful daily study regimin. So great a topic, deserves so great an effort, and Lund delivers with this powerful book as only a true disciple of the Lord can.

This unique first-person account offers a window into the mind of a high-functioning, 27-year-old British autistic savant with Asperger's syndrome. Tammet's ability to think abstractly, deviate from routine, and empathize, interact and communicate with others is impaired, yet he's capable of incredible feats of memorization and mental calculation. *Starred Review* Although Tammet is only 27, his autobiography is as fascinating as Benjamin Franklin's and John Stuart Mill's, both of which are, like his, about the growth of a mind. Not that Tammet is a scientist-statesman or philosopher. He is an autistic savant who can perform hefty arithmetical calculations at lightning speed and acquire speaking competency in a previously unknown language in mere days (the latter capability he used to create the Web-based language-learning systems with which he supports himself). More socially competent and independent than the autistic savant famously played by Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, Tammet shares his peers' strong preferences for routine, peace and quiet, private space, and literalness, as well as aversion to chance occurrences, aural and informational noise, and figurative language (despite his arithmetical gift, he can't do algebra; he reads a lot but never fiction). He learned fellowship very gradually and says he couldn't really acknowledge his eight siblings until he grew up. He also writes some of the clearest prose this side of Hemingway; he tells his story with such concentration, precision, and simplicity that his familial poverty, schooling as a "mainstreamed" student, self-realization as gay, and embracing of Christianity prove as enthralling as they are, ultimately, normal. An astonishing book that will touch and warm your heart

This is an astonishing book, written in first person. It is a memoir of the author's life with the "synaesthesia and savant syndrome", a rare form of Asperger's syndrome.

People with synaethesia see numbers as forms with color and texture, and days as vivid colors, and so Daniel Tammet has the ability to see in his mind numbers and days as colors, each number and day having its own distinct color as an attribute. A day with a color, like a flower with a scent! The blue day of the title of this book refers to Wednesday, which, like the number nine, he sees in his mind as blue. "I know it was a Wednesday," narrates Tammet, "because the date is blue in my mind and Wednesdays are always blue, like the number nine or the sound of loud voices arguing."

Daniel is also a savant, with a remarkable ability to multiply and divide given numbers with astonishing speed. He can recite from memory the number pi, 22 divided by 7, or 3.1428571 to 22,514 decimal places, a feat which will take him a little over five hours! He says numbers are beautiful things, and that pi is as beautiful as Mona Lisa.

Like Christopher John Francis Boone, the fifteen year old hero of Mark Haddon's novel, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time", Daniel, too, is very fond of prime numbers. "Prime numbers feel smooth, like pebbles," he says. He can recognize every prime number up to 9,973. He can speak in ten languages, including Icelandic, Lithuanian and Welsh, and he has the ability to learn a new language within a few days. He learnt Icelandic, for example, within a week; a most remarkable feat for any human being. He doesn't understand jokes easily, and the expressions on human faces he finds baffling. And like Christopher, he doesn't like to be touched.

He is perhaps the only person in this world with the "synaesthesia and savant syndrome" who has written a book in his own words, without using a ghost writer. What causes this syndrome is a mystery to neurologists; they have been trying to unravel the mystery, so far without much success. They speculate that a series of seizures Daniel suffered in his childhood might have caused the savant syndrome. But this is just their speculation; no one knows the real cause.

For a man who sees numbers and days as colors, this book is written in a simple, bland, colorless prose. Nevertheless, reading this book is a marvelous and rewarding experience. This book will touch and warm your heart.

Unique insight

Over the last couple of years there has been an explosion of new and valuable material written on the experience of autism, much of it written from the points of view of either how to deal with an autistic child or a more medical explanation of symptoms. Reading about what it actually feels like to live with autism is very rare. Daniel's ability to so carefully describe to us how he experiences life is highly unusual and must be incredibly valuable to researchers.

Daniel Tammet is still a very young man, and his autobiography is necessarily not going to be very long. Moreover, due to the nature of his condition it was not until very recently that he has had much by way of dealings with the outside world. Much of the book takes place in his own mind, his relationships with numbers, logic, mathematics, chess and puzzles, essentially how his mind organizes its thought. One also finds how the tiniest irregularities in his routines - a dropped spoon, perhaps, or the ring of a cell phone - can not only disrupt his thought but can set him off on a 'meltdown' psychologically and physically, from which recovery may take minutes or hours. Order, quiet, routine, predictability and an internal logic assume incredible importance.

The part of his personality dealing with events outside his own mind is very fragile and stunted. Although Daniel comes across in his writing as a giving, kind and basically generous person, there is a lack of understanding, of feeling, what love, empathy, and interpersonal relations are all about. His discovery of another kind man in Neil, his partner, must have been an inestimable blessing, but no doubt a very rare one for a person with autism, and it has helped him slowly grow. Nonetheless, after all of the sacrifices his family has made - and they are clearly a very loving and supportive family who must have endured much (Daniel is not even their only autistic child), one reads of Daniel's fathers breakdowns and decline into poor health and senses no special bond or understanding, only a clinical detachment. I do not write this to accuse Daniel of not caring; it is part of the condition and Daniel's honesty in writing how he feels (or not) is important.

There are chapters about his setting the records for recitation of pi, of meeting Kim Peel (the real-life subject of the movie Rain Man), of his travels to Iceland and his making of the Brainman movie, interviews of him on Letterman, etc, which are less interesting than the opening discussion of just how he perceives his mind to work. But the last chapter is also fascinating: he reveals his Christianity, somewhat of a surprise, he discusses the impact his reading of G K Chesterton (very well known in Britain but much less so in the States) has had on his life, and ponders the future.

The book is validation for all those who feel alienated, different, and unusual, and show how all can still make their own unique contribution. That Daniel was able to find himself and some satisfaction and happiness will hopefully inspire many others.

Patience, support, love and guts

I learned of Daniel Tammet while listening to him get interviewed on BBC Radio. He spoke of the episode he details toward the end of the book where he learns Icelandic - an extraordinarily difficult language - in the span of about two weeks (only 4 days of tutored training)....well enough to hold a 15-minute interview in that tongue on national television. Tammet has Asperger's Syndrome, making him a functioning autistic. He possesses savant-like capabilities, manifested by his wizardry with calendrical calculations and his successful memorization of pi out to the 22,514th place. Oh, by the way, the recital of the 22,514 digits takes place _in public_ and at Oxford no less. Yikes!

How has Tammet succeeded despite his hardship? The answers are in 'Blue Day': the patience of his parents; the social interaction with eight siblings; the love and support of his partner; and, frankly, some plain old courage and gumption on Tammet's part. After completing school, he volunteers to teach English and is sent abroad to Lithuania. It's there his talent for languages flourishes.

Loved it

So great to read about stories behind many songs that soundtracked a good portion of my life and still continue to do so. Book is full of interesting information from the band and Robert himself. Some cool press clippings and tid-bits, it's very Cure, very eclectic; I loved it. The book ends with Kiss me Kiss Me Kiss me being released, so you never get to masterpiece that is Disintegration, and I would love to read about how that all came about, since it was the album that started me on The Cure and the one that I think is just about a handful of musically perfect creations from the first note to the last. I am hoping that part two of the book will come out. Even so, I had such fun couple of afternoons sifting through the book and listening to each album parallel to reading about it. What a great band, what great music legacy they created, and what interesting driving/creative force Robert Smith is. Always loved him, always will. Recommended for fans, or newcomers to their music.

Answers To A Lot Of Questions

All I can say is thank goodness there is a such thing as satellite radio with wonderful stations such as XM Channel 44 titled 1st Wave. This is the station that already played some of my longtime favorites such as Siouxsie and the Banshees and Kate Bush. It also re-accquanted me with great alternative bands like Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, New Order, and most notably The Cure. The Cure was one of those bands I always seemed to know, yet not. The few tunes that made it to my long ago American Top 40 radio immediately caught my attention as a kid in the 80's, and, strangely enough, I've never not known who Robert Smith was. I must have caught a quick snapshot of him in one of the trillion teeny bop magazines out at the time. I somehow never forgot The Cure's lead vocalist and songwriter. It must have been the Edward Scissorhand aesthetic, which I always found intriguing. Here lately, however, I really began to wonder about this character and his band. By this time I had become very familiar with older singles such as "Killing An Arab", "A Forrest", and "Three Imaginary Boys", and wondered how in the world this band evolved from a rather stark punk sound to the more complex rhythms encountered on tracks such as "Pictures Of You" and "Fascination Street". I decided I needed a good, straight forward guide to answer some questions. I was very happy to find what I was looking for in "Ten Imaginary Years". True, it only covers the first ten years, but jam packed full of interviews of all the members and a great many photos. What I found extremely helpful was the frankness of this biography. It wasn't written to kiss the band's rear. It was very honest in the fact that many critics hated them for not being radio friendly, then questioned integrity when a lighter more juanty tune did break through to the Top 40 charts. On the opposite end, however, this biography was not written as tabloid fodder. Personally, I'm sick and tired of has-been rockers who decide they need pages of a book to spew all their long ago drug induced escapades and groupie trash in order to make the next mortgage payment. Of course, as a group of young guys in the 80's, drugs were around, excessive drinking happened, but as far as information involving significant others, all the members were quite discreet. Bravo! It's about the music these guys have created in their first ten years together, which are, no doubt, some of the most definitive songs of the post-punk era, not how many pieces of trash from the audience came along to the after parties. Again, Bravo! Highly recommended for any Cure-ious fan.

Great insights into a great band's early years

Great insight into the formative and developing years of the enigmatic Cure. Members flow in and out and around Robert Smith as his and their visions evolve, and as they deal with increasing success and fame. Written as a series of direct quotes from the key people involved, including those who left or came back and why. You get a good feel for the intensity, passion, fun and problems directly from the members. A4 size with plenty of early photos this is a great read and bookmark for the early years of this great band.
