Versions of Pygmalion, by J. Hillis Miller

The literary school called “deconstruction” has long been dogged by the charge that it is unprincipled, its doors closed to the larger world of moral and social concern. J. Hillis Miller, one of America’s leading teacher-critics, sets the record straight by looking into a series of fictions that allow him to show that ethics has always been at the heart of deconstructive literary criticism. Miller proves his point not by assertion but by doing―deconstruction is here in the hands of a master teacher.

Miller’s controlling image is Ovid’s Pygmalion, who made a statue that came alive and whose descendants (the incestuous Myrrha, the bloodied Adonis) then had to bear the effects of what he did. All storytellers can be seen as Pygmalions, creating characters (personification) who must then act, choose, and evaluate (what Miller calls the “ethics of narration”). If storytellers must be held accountable for what they create, then so must critics or teachers who have their own stories to tell when they write or discuss stories. If the choices are heavy, they are also, Miller wryly points out, happily unpredictable.

The teacher’s first “ethical act” is the choice of what to teach, and Miller chooses his texts boldly. As an active reader, the kind demanded by deconstruction, Miller refashions each story, another ethical act, an intervention that may have social, political, and historical consequences. He then looks beyond text and critical theory to ask whether writing literature, reading it, teaching it, or writing about it makes anything happen in the real world of material history.

From Library Journal
Miller illuminates "what is at stake when someone becomes infatuated with a statue or a painting or . . . when someone reads or hears a story and thinks of its characters as 'real people.' " The question is one of personification (prosopopoeia), and Miller chooses Ovid's Pygmalion story as the locus classicus for "the ascription to entities that are not really alive first of a name , then of a face, and finally . . . of a voice." He then examines this trope and its implications in James's What Maisie Knew and "The Last of the Valerii," Kleist's "Der Findling," Melville's "Bartleby the Scrivener," and Blanchot's L'Asset du mort . These readings also fulfill his promise, made in The Ethics of Reading (1987), to examine the relation between ethics and narrative. If "deconstruction" is Miller's method, his perspectives and learning are broad, his insight valuable; this elegant book is for specialists as well as those concerned with current literary criticism.

Maximalist: America in the World from Truman to Obama, by Stephen Sestanovich

From a writer with long and high-level experience in the U.S. government, a startling and provocative assessment of America’s global dominance. Maximalist puts the history of our foreign policy in an unexpected new light, while drawing fresh, compelling lessons for the present and future.

When the United States has succeeded in the world, Stephen Sestanovich argues, it has done so not by staying the course but by having to change it—usually amid deep controversy and uncertainty. For decades, the United States has been a power like no other. Yet presidents and policy makers worry that they—and, even more, their predecessors—haven’t gotten things right. Other nations, they say to themselves, contribute little to meeting common challenges. International institutions work badly. An effective foreign policy costs too much. Public support is shaky. Even the greatest successes often didn’t feel that way at the time.

Sestanovich explores the dramatic results of American global primacy built on these anxious foundations, recounting cycles of overcommitment and underperformance, highs of achievement and confidence followed by lows of doubt. We may think there was a time when America’s international role reflected bipartisan unity, policy continuity, and a unique ability to work with others, but Maximalist tells a different story—one of divided administrations and divisive decision making, of clashes with friends and allies, of regular attempts to set a new direction. Doing too much has always been followed by doing too little, and vice versa.

Maximalist unearths the backroom stories and personalities that bring American foreign policy to life. Who knew how hard Lyndon Johnson fought to stay out of the war in Vietnam—or how often Henry Kissinger ridiculed the idea of visiting China? Who remembers that George Bush Sr. found Ronald Reagan’s diplomacy too passive—or that Bush Jr. considered Bill Clinton’s too active? Leaders and scoundrels alike emerge from this retelling in sharper focus than ever before. Sestanovich finds lessons in the past that anticipate and clarify our chaotic present.

From Booklist
The recent revelations concerning spying on leaders of our allies by the NSA may have surprised many. However, in this survey of American foreign policy over the past seven decades, Sestanovich, a former diplomat and currently a professor of international diplomacy at Columbia University, makes clear that all administrations have used ethically questionable tactics in the pursuit of broader strategic foreign-policy goals. But Sestanovich is more concerned with consistency than ethics in the conduct of our foreign policy. He asserts that between and even within administrations we have lurched from active (or overactive) involvement to retrenchment. After WWII, we understandably shrank our military and shrank from confrontation until forced into involvement by the Korean War. Similarly, the failures in Vietnam and Iraq have caused similar reluctance to intervene abroad. The result, Sestanovich maintains, is a dangerous uncertainty among both our allies and adversaries. What he views as retrenchment could be considered sensible restraint. Still, this is a valuable and provocative interpretation of our diplomatic and military conduct. --Jay Freeman

Review
“[An] analytic tour de force . . . a useful and often original look at the strategies of the last 12 American presidents . . . a strong case. . . . Anyone interested in the past or the future of American foriegn policy and power would benefit from its insights.” —Walter Russell Mead,Foreign Affairs

“In his engaging and richly anecdotal new book, Maximalist, Stephen Sestanovich applies that understanding as a framework for reexamining post-World War II U.S. history to find the persistent truths and lessons that he believes can inform our understanding of the present. . .. A scholar of the Soviet Union and a former U.S. diplomat who now teaches at Columbia University, Sestanovich shows that the ambitions of policymakers and the cycles of public opinion that drive them are inevitable and recurrent. He is at his best in describing the Johnson and Nixon administrations, capturing the infighting among those presidents and their senior advisers as they grappled with America’s role in the world.” —Marcus Brauchli, The Washington Post

“Maximalist . . . makes clear that the U.S. has never achieved strategic continuity. American strategy has frequently shifted, sometimes over the course of a single administration, and these disruptions have often proved beneficial to our national security. . . . [An] excellent book.” —Sohrab Ahmari, The Wall Street Journal

“Among the many virtues of Maximalist is the mathematical elegance of its thesis. . . .Maximalist surveys American foreign policy from Truman to Obama. . . . Compelling. . . . Refreshingly non-partisan.” —Michael Doran, Commentary

“Maximalistis a highly readable account of American engagement during the Cold War and the War on Terror. It provides a commonsense means to assess American military and diplomatic policy without the fog of political rhetoric.” —Karl Wolff, New York Journal of Books

“A leading voice. . . . Offers a provocative reasssement of America's global dominance. . . . Sestanovich finds fresh lessons in the past that clarify our chaotic present."
—The Record

“Incisive and provocative. Written by one of our country’s foremostscholars, Maximalist is rich with anecdotes and enlivened by little-known details about well-known events. Sestanovich has made a masterfulcontribution to the history of modern American diplomacy.” —Madeleine Albright

“This is one of the most important books ever written aboutU.S. foreign policy. It will immediately join George F. Kennan’s classic American Diplomacy as essential reading for all students of America’s behavior in the world. In fact, it should replace it. Sestanovich is a brilliant and insightful writer. His book couldn’t be more timely.” —Robert Kagan, author of The World America Made

“Maximalist is a nicely provocative and highlyreadable account of how presidents have used American power since World War II. It combines carefully researched history with advice that is very relevant to the situation of the United States today.” —Joseph S. Nye, Jr., author of Soft Power and Presidential Leadership and the Creation of the American Era

“Americans routinely need to be reminded that our past was not as smooth and rosy as we like to remember it; Stephen Sestanovich provides a masterful and entertaining corrective. Maximalist isbeautifully written, with engaging anecdotes woven throughout. Most important, itwill change your view of Obama's foreign policy.” —Anne-Marie Slaughter, President and CEO, New America Foundation; Bert G. Absolutely Wonderful!!!
By Drew F. Schufletowski
I learned some things about the tumultuous post-World War II policy-making environment in Washington of which I was not aware despite considerable previous reading on the subject. Every current student of international relations and the U.S. role in the world really ought to read Sestanovich's new book.

The Cyclic Nature of Foreign Policy?
By GraniteSapper
Much of the recent spate of writing decrying the decline of U.S. power and influence centers on issues of domestic decay and turmoil, with the view that the United States has somehow lost its way in the world. Some authors argue that these domestic political, economic, and social challenges have hamstrung the current administration in pursuing the kind of aggressive, engaged foreign policy needed in this volatile time. Stephan Sestanovich, the author of the recently-published Maximalist, shows that the current challenges of the Obama administration are not new, but part of cycle that can be traced back to the post-World War II Truman administration.
Sestanovich is a former U.S. diplomat, and an official under both Presidents Reagan and Clinton. He is currently a professor of international relations at Columbia, as well as a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Sestanovich has written a highly-readable and very thorough history of U.S. foreign policy since 1947. The book does not introduce much in the way of new research or detail. However, the author is successful in repackaging previous works and incorporating a great many anecdotes to retell the story in a slightly new way. It is a worthy addition to U.S. foreign policy scholarship, and should be read by any serious student of diplomatic history, or for anyone in a position to advise on or craft future foreign policy.
The book expands on a thesis, that of a “maximalist” tradition in U.S. foreign policy, one Sestanovich first examined in a Spring 2005 article from The National Interest. Sestanovich, in this new book, describes a foreign policy and diplomatic continuum cycling between periods of maximalism to retrenchment. One critique of the book is that the author never defines these two terms, so central to his argument. The reader quickly intuits that maximalism equals overreach, with retrenchment the “do less” corollary that follows when America must pick up the pieces. The author then details how administrations cycle between these two extremes: the maximalist Truman followed by a retrencher Eisenhower; who is then followed by maximalist Kennedy/Johnson administrations; then by a long period of retrenchment under presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter; the maximalism of Reagan; a pause in the cycle under presidents George H.W. Bush and Clinton; the maximalism of George W. Bush; and finally this current period retrenchment of President Obama.
A few unanswered questions simmer below the surface as the reader follows a story long on narrative but short on analysis. The central question and criticism is that the cycle as described is far too simplistic. Can any administration be categorized as purely maximalist or retrencher? The author concedes that most administrations made decisions and set policies that ran counter to the general direction of their foreign policy. These decisions were almost always influenced by external events, beyond the ken of the president and his team of advisors. Sestanovich was unable to cleanly categorize the George H.W. Bush and Clinton administrations for these very reasons, and the author notes that it was not President George W. Bush’s initial intent to be a maximalist. The second- and third-order impacts of policy decisions are often to blame for these shifts. The decisions of our partners and allies, unforeseen world events, and black swans like 9-11 are as if not more responsible for shifts in focus. Campaign rhetoric and an administration’s ‘going-in position’ rarely survive first contact with future realities. The author would have been better served to incorporate more of this dynamic in his cyclic analysis, and examine why presidents seem to so often misjudge or fail to anticipate events that shake their preferred interrelationship with the world.
Sestanovich spends most of the book examining the foreign policy realm of presidential decision making, and what drives administrations to ‘go large’ or ‘go small’ when pursuing national interests and exporting American values and exceptionalism. The interplay between President Nixon and Henry Kissinger is one of the highlights of the book, particularly in their efforts in opening relations with China. This examination is interesting but it is also incomplete. Sestanovich, like many other scholars and analysts, fails to adequately account for the domestic political dynamics and issues that impact the nation’s ability to act globally. It is as though the author believes that international credibility trumps domestic will. This Innenpolitik – Realpolitik interplay and tension, best explained in Peter Trubowitz’s book Politics and Strategy, is ground zero for grand strategic development. Just as unforeseen events abroad can derail or re-vector foreign policy, so too will domestic challenges, often causing an administration to be more inward-focused. Sestanovich’s argument would have been strengthened in recognizing this relationship and implicitly weaving more examples throughout his narrative.
The author’s lack of detailed analysis does detract from his argument that the United States must remain actively engaged in the world, and to be more maximalist than retrencher. Sestanovich never convinces the reader why a more balanced and pragmatic policy position, similar to that taken by the Obama administration, can be as effective, or at least a suitable course for the times. These criticisms aside, Maximalist remains an excellent history of U.S. foreign policy since 1947, and provides yet another lens through which to view presidential decision-making in the modern era. Future policy makers, politicians and strategists would do well to take note.

Good foreign policy history from Truman to Obama
By Gderf
This is an excellent history of maximalist presidents who needed or desired to use American power to fix the world alternating with those who needed to follow a minimalist or retrenchment course. Sestanovich relates the poor results of multilateralism and how American success has not depended on international institutions like the UN and NATO.

Truman's legacy is the loss of China and the Korean war and the expansive Truman doctrine in Turkey and Greece. On the positive side, he instituted the Marshall plan that preserved western Europe from communism. Truman after implementing the Marshall Plan, fought the Korean War and promulgated the Truman Doctrine regarding policy towards Turkey and Greece.

Eisenhower cut back military expenditures, backed dictators and started the nuclear arms race. George Kennan originated the cold war policy of containment. Hungarians expected more help. Our allies were surprised at betrayal in the Suez crisis.

Kennedy combined an activist bent with extensive deliberation. He was forced into activist roles in the Berlin air lift and Cuban missile crisis. He expanded the Cold War into a nuclear arms race while beginning the policy of limited test ban treaties.. The book embellishes the near danger of nuclear war triggered by Cuba and the Russian submarine incident.

We still suffer from the aftermath of the well documented LBJ era of war and Great Society. Johnson is depicted as a compulsively hands on president, exhibiting totally uncertain policy, being drawn into the Vietnam War by inches by his advisors McNamara and Westmorland. Stepanovich calls him the only president who attempted to carry out the policy of his predecessor. A very arguable point of view.

Nixon never understood VN culture. His legacy is Kent State, My Lie, overthrow of elected governments and support of repressive regimes like Pinochet and Suharto. Nixon and Kissinger opened relations with China and actively sought peace in the ME. One key aspect was Sadat leaving the Soviet fold. Ford carried on for Nixon.

Jimmy Carter's legacy is abrogation of the presidency to Congress which failed to deal with domestic inflation or foreign problems. The book depicts Carter's inept handling of everything from Soviet relations to the hostage crisis.

Reagan is accused of a passive management style. He generally rebuffed the peace initiatives of Gorbachev, who knew that Star Wars could not protect the USA. Gorbachev lost his battle with NATO over nuclear balance.

GWH Bush went from an active role in Iraq to attempted retrenchment and fiscal responsibility.

The 1990s presaged a return to activism. Clinton switched from retrenchment in his first term to activism in Bosnia in his second. He watched helplessly as events unfolded in Rwanda, Somalia and Haiti. Holbrooke formulated activist policy for late intervention in Bosnia. Clinton, as president, ended ADFC and instituted energy and financial deregulation. The book overlooks the easy money policy that set the stage for the bubbles in 2000 and 2008. The Reagan foreign policy peace dividend was mostly squandered with an easy money domestic policy that set the stage for two economic bubbles.

The recent painful legacy of George Bush is well depicted. GW Bush foreign policy course after 9/11 still haunts us today, with residues of two wars. Republicans and Dems (Pelosi) thought that Saddam had WMDs. General Franks thought that we would be gone from Iraq within a year.

The Obama administration follows Bush policies, appointing a hawkish Secretary of State, and promoting continuation of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as developing drone capability and condoning resultant civilian deaths. The civil rights abuses at Guantanamo continue unabated. He tells the American people we are winding down while telling Afghans, led by his friend Hamid Karzai, that we will never leave. Obama continuously accedes to the view of his military advisors. He accelerated the war with a Bush like surge. While Obama claims the exit from Iraq as fulfilling a promise, it was negotiated by Bush. The war on drugs is as ineffectual as ever as he follows Bush domestic policy for a slow recovery.
Obama follows Bush policy in spite of retrenchment rhetoric. Obama, despite talking about need for retrenchment following the excesses of the Bush administration, follows the Bush exit schedule from Iraq and copied the Bush surge in Afghanistan with subsequent troop increases. Obama then tried for his own war legacy in Iraq. Obama's "pivot to the Pacific" appears to be China appeasement coupled with desertion of ME allies, Israel and Egypt. Sepanovich points out that we were lucky to obtain the benefit of Russian diplomacy to avoid humiliation in Syria. The book was too early to note the current impasse in the Crimea characterized by Obama's futile empty rhetoric. We can only hope there is no Obama war legacy in the offing.

Sestanovich ends with summary of maximalists Truman, JFK, LBJ, Reagan and GW Bush ;minimalists Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Obama; and two he calls hybrid who switched from one to the other, GWH Bush and Clinton.

It's difficult to ignore the effect of domestic policy on foreign policy especially in the areas of finance and trade. The decline of America, while due to primarily to social policy, can't be ignored in military and foreign policy, as Sestanovich attempts to do. The epilogue analysis shows how less is often more. I wish our current leaders would believe it.

The murder takes Jack from the benevolent associations of Chinatown to the take-out restaurants, strip clubs, and underground gambling establishments of the Bronx, to a wealthy, exclusive New Jersey borough. It's a world of secrets and unclear allegiances, of Chinatown street gangs and major Triad players. With the help of an elderly fortune teller and an old friend, the unpredictable Billy Bow, Jack races to solve his most difficult case yet.

From Booklist
When an Asian body is found in the Harlem River, the NYPD calls Detective Jack Yu. Recently returned from the West Coast, where he killed two men and was shot himself, Yu needs to talk to a department shrink. But before he can, he’s working on the homicide of the unidentified young Chinese man pulled from the water with only scraps of paper to offer leads. Yu’s neighborhood friend, Billy Bow, the unofficial eyes and ears of Chinatown, who runs Tofu King, and old Chinese wisewoman Ah Por provide help, but it’s Yu’s persistence that eventually pays off. When Yu traces the murder of the victim, identified as restaurant deliveryman Yao Sing Chang, back to a powerful person in Chinatown, the connection puts Yu himself in danger. Chang’s fourth in the Jack Yu series (after Red Jade, 2010) continues a pattern of sensitive exploration of the Chinese American community, from its rival gangs to its generational differences. Another brisk police procedural with a protagonist who manages to bridge two cultures. --Michele Leber

Review
Praise for Death Money

"Exciting and absorbing... Destiny could find no better assistant than the decent, determined Det. Jack Yu."
—The Wall Street Journal

"In his dogged insistence on providing the Chinese word for the Chinese thing, Henry Chang may very well be insisting on the complex reality that lies behind the often tacky face that Chinatown shows to the North American eye."
—Reviewing the Evidence

"An exotic background, plus a solid police procedural story, make this a good read."
—Deadly Pleasures

"The best Jack Yu mystery yet! Death Money is a lightning-speed sordid tale that travels through the dark alleys of bygone New York City Chinese restaurants. Chester Himes, the master of Harlem mysteries, would have been proud."
—Naomi Hirahara, Edgar Award-winning author of Murder on Bamboo Lane and the Mas Arai mystery series

"Lydia Chin fans: If you don't know the Chinatown of Henry Chang's Jack Yu, I think you want to. If you do, I know you want this book! "
—S.J. Rozan, author of the Lydia Chin series

“Think you know New York? Then let Henry Chang show you around. This is tough crime fiction that reaches into the darkest corners of Chinatown and beyond, written with a deep understanding of the world through which Detective Jack Yu moves, and a soulful compassion for those who inhabit it. Every word has the ring of truth about it.”
—Stuart Neville, author of The Final Silence

"Chang's writing is clear and fluid, without padding or melodramatics... Jack's saga is compelling and non-formulaic crime fiction, but also a glimpse into the closed world of an Asian diaspora."
—International Noir Fiction

"Chang writes in a strong, tight style and shares an insider's look at Chinese-American culture."
—Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine

“What raises the book to a level far beyond an above-average mystery is Chang’s intricate and intimate knowledge of the geography and culture of New York’s Chinatown, from the alleys that the tourists rarely visit and never notice to the transactional interplay that takes place in plain view yet is unobserved by all but the area’s inhabitants… One of the most compelling and riveting novels you will read this year.”
—Bookreporter

"Fast-paced, edgy and flavorful."
—Kirkus Reviews

"The depiction of a Chinatown that tourists don’t see (e.g., seedy strip clubs) sets this apart from other gritty police procedurals."
—Publishers Weekly

"[A] sensitive exploration of the Chinese American community, from its rival gangs to its generationaldifferences. Another brisk police procedural with a protagonist who manages to bridge two cultures."
—Booklist

"Takes the reader on a tour through the Chinese communities in New York’s five boroughs that is frightening, fascinating and not a little enlightening."
—The Toronto Star

"Fast action in a singular arena."
—Crime Review (UK)

Praise for Henry Chang

"For readers who relish noir suspense, it doesn't get any better than this stunning novel."
—Boston Globe

"[Chang] paints, in miniature, a harsh world of neon and shadows but doesn't slight the Big Questions.... [He takes] genre fiction to a deeper level, focusing on the mysteries of the human mind that a murder brings to light in those with some connection to the deceased. Mysteries, quirks, that might otherwise lie buried, but that subtly define who we are."
—Ron Rosenbaum, Slate

"An action-packed plot and a carefully detailed mystery make this a feast for readers who crave insight into the cultural melting pot that is the United States."
—Library Journal, Starred Review

"Chang captures the sights, sounds and smells of the various Chinatowns, showing the common threads and uniqueness of each as well as their histories ... A gripping police procedural full of surprising twists."
—Kansas City Star

"Chinatown is the hero here. Better say antihero, because while the picture is vivid and often compelling, it's anything but pretty."
—Kirkus Reviews

"This is a dense, moody, and intelligent glimpse at Chinese life in New York as seen through the world-weary eyes of a young man with a foot firmly planted in two cultures."
—Booklist

The mystery and Chang's intimate knowledge of New York make DEATH NOTE a compelling and riveting novel.
By Bookreporter
I strongly suggest that you start reading Henry Chang’s Jack Yu mysteries. There are four of them, of which DEATH MONEY is the latest. They are not long, dense, complex, or any of the other things that might keep you from becoming engrossed in yet another new series; they are simply very, very good. Yu serves as a homicide detective and cultural tour guide, adroitly working both roles with a natural nonchalance that, in turn, causes the narrative to flow quickly. He can take you places where you never have been before without your having to leave the comfort of your reading space.

While Chang has not been hesitant to move Yu out of the familiar (to him) confines of his native New York, almost all of DEATH MONEY, with the exception of a brief foray into New Jersey, takes place in Chinatown. Yu is brought in to investigate when an Asian man is found dead in New York Harbor. At first, the death appears to be a possible suicide until an autopsy reveals that the victim was murdered. Forensics tells Yu a bit about the killer, but there still isn’t much of a trail for him to follow. The man has no identification, and there is little else in the way of clues to pursue --- aside from a cryptic list of telephone numbers that, in turn, belong to various Chinese carry-out restaurants, including one owned by Yu’s friend, Billy Bow, who is every guy’s dream wing man (if every guy has a death wish). Still, Bow’s network proves invaluable to Yu, whose status as a policeman often results in doors being closed that otherwise would be open to him.

Making do with what he has, Yu follows an extremely tenuous trail that takes him from Chinatown’s hidden gambling dens to the unspeakable poverty of Asian immigrants who are exploited by the very people who were supposed to be their salvation. But when Yu’s investigation leads him to a confrontation with one of Chinatown’s most powerful leaders, Yu is none-too-gently warned off the case by forces within the NYPD. Therefore, Yu must decide if he will continue to seek justice for an almost anonymous victim, a move that may cost him his career...or worse.

There is a mystery at the heart of DEATH MONEY, one that is intertwined in the “who” of the victim and “why” of the murder. The answers to those questions, and Yu’s pursuit of them, would be enough to make the story worth reading. However, what raises the book to a level far beyond an above-average mystery is Chang’s intricate and intimate knowledge of the geography and culture of New York’s Chinatown, from the alleys that the tourists rarely visit and never notice to the transactional interplay that takes place in plain view yet is unobserved by all but the area’s inhabitants. The combination of these factors makes DEATH MONEY one of the most compelling and riveting novels you will read this year.

Dogged Determination
By Ted Feit
Detective Jack Wu once again is tapped to solve a case because he is of Chinese descent. When the body of an Asian man is seen embedded in the debris and ice of the Harlem River, he is called from his Chinatown precinct to take control of the case, which turns out to be one of murder.

The only problem is that the victim has no identification, and there isn’t a clue to be found. So Wu follows the Chinese community through the city, north to The Bronx and its restaurants, gambling and sex dens, and south to Chinatown and its own fleshpots and gaming spots. And along the way, he learns a variety of secrets attempting to give justice to a man who was all but invisible.

This fourth novel in the series, as were its predecessors, is economically written, with especially short sentences, and a smattering of Chinese words and phrases to provide authenticity. This police procedural moves in logical progression across New York City, looking deeply at the Chinese culture and environment of New York’s Lower East Side. Wu is an unusual investigator, applying the usual methodology of police investigation with the occult, an old woman who touches object obtained during the investigation and supplying him with clues. Maybe other protagonists should consider Ouija boards.

A very enjoyable read, and recommended.

Can't completely recommend it
By Darkmatters
I can't say I completely recommend it, at least not until after reading more informative books about directing and cinematic composition such as Film Directing Shot by Shot: Visualizing from Concept to Screen (Michael Wiese Productions) and Film Directing: Cinematic Motion, Second Edition, both by Steven D Katz and The Filmmaker's Eye: Learning (and Breaking) the Rules of Cinematic Composition by Gustavo Mercado. I'm actually a little surprised at all the overwhelmingly positive reviews of this book and thought it needed a bit of more critical appraisal.

It seems to be part of a series of books all made in the "widescreen" format, I think trying to cash in on the HD craze. The layout of these books is similar to the 16:9 HD aspect ratio, and the books are designed to be visually appealing, but seem to be very sparse on information. There's a lot of blank white space, and what few words there are suffer from a stiffly formulaic presentation loaded with pointless repetition. Each page only features a few brief paragraphs and feels like it could have been developed a lot more. And then to waste more space, each chapter pointlessly lists the credits for each movie mentioned in that chapter - what's the point of that? I wouldn't mind it if it seemed the actual descriptions of the cinematic conventions themselves -- the meat and potatoes of the book - were more fully presented first, but it seems the credits listing eats up valuable space that should have been devoted to more fully developed discussion of those conventions.

I'm not completely panning the book... it IS a good brief introduction to "100 cinematic conventions every filmmaker should know". But that's all it is. To make an analogy, it's like a book that lists 100 great ingredients with very brief notes as to how each tastes and what kind of dish it can be used in, but has no recipes in it. The books mentioned above have those recipes... they go into great detail about staging and blocking and how to arrange actors and scene elements for various effects. The information in those books is presented in such a way that you come out with coherent understanding of how to set up certain types of scenes.

Once you have a grounding in that kind of detailed info, then a book like Cinematic Storytelling is a good addition... some additional ingredients to add to your dishes once you know how to cook them. But that listing of ingredients does no good until you know some recipes.

Things are finally starting to come together.
By Not Cordelia
Which means that Watanuki is starting to fall apart. Definitely serves to advance the series (as opposed to filler material that, while charming, doesn't advance the overarching storyline at all). Doumeki and Yuko play their usual parts, but Watanuki is becoming aware that there is something he's forgotten.

Not as lighthearted as previous volumes, but well worth reading--the somewhat more serious subject matter (involving change and transition and choices) is as unavoidable in the storyline as it is in real life.

More stories from the XXXHOLIC universe! Very good mix of the creepy with Japanese folklore mythology. Spirits and Yokai are everywhere. Japanese Shintoism holds that all things, organic and non-organic, are imbued with a spiritual power. Japanese Manga often features this spiritual aspect in their stories. Xxxholic is deliciously creepy good reading!

Basic Radio Described Through Ordinary Everyday Examples
By KS4RT
In my opinion this book could be used by anyone interested in learning about basic radio principles with very little (if any) prior knowledge about the subject. I wish I had this book when I was a teenager. The ARRL or American Radio Relay League has always had very good publications by very good authors. One of my first books published by the ARRL was Understanding Amateur Radio, 2nd edition, 1971. Basic Radio is actually easier to understand. If the reader should have additional questions about terms, definitions of words, etc. they can usually be found through web searches. But in most cases the author does so well at explaining, if the reader takes a little longer to absorb the information, and/or reads the passage again, they should grasp the full impact of the authors meanings. Very, very well written! The author begins with radio principles dating back over 100 years ago and explains in very elementary terms how far radio electronics has come over the years.

I bought Basic Radio to teach my communications club students about radio. Anyone with at least a 6th grade reading level should be able to understand if they take their time reading the information.

Good Book with some left to be desired

I built my first radio thanks to that book, something that I wished since I was a kid but never had the help or the know-how. Since then I'm hooked.

The projects that I have completed (I'm not done with the book yet) are well explained. What was best for me is a parts list! The author tells you exactly which parts to use, their part numbers, and even where you can order them. Something that was crucial for the absolute beginner like me since I am usually intimidated by seeing antenna, coils, variable capacitors, and oh those high-impedance headphones! on a schematic and had no idea where to get them. I actually discovered a local store where you can get most of those things, and even vacuum tubes! ([...]). The explanations of theory are good but not very thorough.

I can't help but get the feeling that the book is half baked though. The book has about 25 chapters, but only 7 hands-on projects, 4 of them about the crystal-set which is only 2 chapters. I wish there were more hands-on projects in the same style that the crystal-set has been introduced. Oscillators/Mixers/Filters/etc. These are all missing. I wish the author had taken the time to demonstrate those concepts and use them to progress gradually to building a super-hetrodyne receiver, but it seems to me as if the hands-one projects were an after thought. The crystal radio project was extremely useful though, I was able to build it and can't describe the feeling that I got listening to my first radio station. I have gradually refined it with the help of the book and other sources and personal experience, and added an audio-amplifier, volume control, and the ability to use normal 8 Ohm headphones. And now I can probably assemble the whole thing in its most basic form in less than an hour. Priceless.

Anyway, I recommend getting the book to get your juices running and learn something new if you are a beginner, then you can proceed by doing lots of experimenting on your own and maybe consulting other books/websites.

Good to have some knowledge of electronics to make this ...
By Fred W. Juengst, Jr.
Wish I knew about this book earlier. Really brings the new ham up to speed on the basics of radio. Good to have some knowledge of electronics to make this book even more readable. You get to know the history behind radio and its development to the superhet. There is a lot of information in almost every sentence and Hallas keeps up a fast pace. Best to take time to try to understand what is being said and try to answer the questions at the end of every short chapter. I now understand my Kenwood TS-2000 and why I have the controls I have. Wish I had read this book 2 years ago but better late than not at all. I want to understand what is going on and this book really sorts out the why and how radio works. You may need to reread sections several times to get the most out of this book and fully understand what Hallas is teaching. That is my only criticism. I have read up to chapter 15 but I feel I still need more time rereading some chapters up to 15. If the radio section is a judge of this book, I am confident the propagation and antennas in chapter 15 to 25 will be equally great. KC9ZSR

Steamy, Fun and Genuine
By synergy
4.5 stars

Wendy Vella always brings the goods. I've been hooked on the Lake Howling series and the group of friends who star in it since, A Promise of Home, the first book. How Sweet It Is is Buster and Willow's story.

If you've been following the series, you know Buster is the strong silent type and a magician in the kitchen. We meet Willow when she comes to Lake Howling to convince Buster to accept an offer for a restaurant he owns in NYC. Until seeing him, Willow doesn't realize that the man she's seeking is the same one who used to make her amazing muffins and fuel her fantasies.

This is an engaging read, chock-full of interesting characters who have rich lives. In addition to offering a great story for Buster and Willow, How Sweet It Is also allows us to catch-up with characters from the first two books in the series. A nice perk.

If you like contemporary romance that is steamy, fun and genuine, this book is a must read.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

HOT BUNS!
By C. B. Freud
The Lake Howling gang is back. Finally it's Buster's turn to find love. Always there when others need him, and with delicious comfort food to boot, this gorgeous town cafe owner, is a good guy, even though on the outside he seems like the typical workaholic baker with a gruff exterior. What people don't know is he owns several cafes, and one in New York where he worked years prior. A daily patron, who incidentally had a major crush on him back then, shows up years later in Lake Howling to talk him into selling said cafe. And he was besotted with her as well back then, but never acted on it. After the initial shock of learning Buster wasn't an employee but the actual owner, Willow is now conflicted. There is an undeniable attraction, but there are reasons she won't reveal that require her to close the deal on the sale of the New York cafe. Also, Willow has some secrets about her past, and Buster has some pretty thick walls built after a failed relationship. Add all this up and you have a recipe for disaster before this relationship has a chance to grow. Can they rise above all these conflicts? You will have to read this book. It can be read as a stand alone, but I think once you've read this, you will fall in love with all the Lake Howling characters and read the whole series like I have. I am an AR so I can get them as soon as possible. Trust me, especially if you live in a cooler climate, this series will really preheat you oven! So, if you like a great cup of coffee, yummy hot muffins, and need I say it, A BAKER WITH HOT BUNS, you will love this book!!

Buster and Willow!
By Lori
I loved this story by Wendy Vella! This is actually the first book in this series I've read, but because the books are written as a whole book part of a series I didn't feel like I had missed out by reading them out of order.
Buster Griffin can be a little grumpy and abrasive, but even so those who know him seem to love him and women find him extremely sexy. He loves living in a small town and being close to his long time friends and family. After living in New York being home was just what he wanted and needed.
Willow Harper learned life lessons the hard way and found peace in her organized and structured life. She had her life mapped out and as far as she was concerned Buster Griffin was getting in the way of those plans. Who knew the man of her fantasies would be this infuriating man that blocked her at every turn?
I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of the books in this series.

I was given an ARC for an honest review. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
