More than seven years ago, the scholar Charlotte Tr�mpler (Head of the Archaeological Collection of the Ruhrlandmuseum Essen, Germany) and Swiss-born Georg Gerster, one of the world's foremost aerial photographers who has been photographing ancient sites from the air for more than fifty years, collaborated on a spectacular publication The Past from Above (Oxford: Oxford University Press; Los Angeles, CA: Getty Publications, 2005). Tr�mpler introduced these images with a contextual overview of importance of aerial photography to archaeological research, architectural history, and the landscape, and provided context for the pictures. Gerster provided amazing aerial photographs of 250 of the world's most significance archaeological sites, with subjects ranging from the temple complex at Karnak, Egypt, to the Great Wall of China, and from the Athenian Acropolis to Aztec palaces in central Mexico. There were nearly a dozen themes used in organizing this work: Archaeological sites in the landscape, settlement types, palaces and royal residences, places of assembly and festival sites, fortifications and bulwarks, limes (military architecture), battlefields, graves and cemeteries, sacred sites, monumental geoglyphs, and resources (water, land, and mineral). Gerster has photographed archaeological sites in 111 countries on six continents and his work has frequently appeared in the National Geographic magazine.
It is fitting that the volume is published this year, Professor Stronach's 80th birthday. He is one of the world's leading experts on ancient Iran, notably the ancient city of Pasargadae which was the capital of Cyrus the Great (559-530 BCE). In the 1960s and 1970s, he served as the Director of the British Institute of Persian Studies in Tehran and then had a long career as a distinguished professor at the University of California at Berkeley, where he is now Professor Emeritus, Near Eastern Studies. Stronach was the recipient of the Archaeological Institute of America's Gold Medal for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement in 2004, the highest honor bestowed by that international professional organization. Ali Mousavi, Curator of Ancient Near East at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, holds a doctorate from Berkeley and collaborated with Stronach as coeditor. Between April 1976 and May 1978 Georg Gerster, flew across the length and breadth of Iran to photograph the landscapes, archaeological sites, and historical monuments that characterize this significant country. A majority of these photographs have remained in his files in Switzerland. But recently, Stronach convinced Gerster and a number of specialists in the art and archaeology of Iran, to join forces to have the images published along with substantive essays current interpretive archaeological and architectural essays.
This new volume, Ancient Iran from the Air, is very similar to The Past from Above but different in that the focus is one country - Iran, ancient Persia - and the aerial photographs and essays by eight contributors are in chronological order. This monograph documents the long history of the built environment in this significant region of the ancient Near East. The volume contains a "Foreword" by Stronach, an "Introduction" authored by both editors, six chapters each authored by one or more scholars of international repute, an "Afterword" by Gerster plus 312 valuable up-to-date "Bibliography" mostly in the English language with a few in German, French, and Persian.
Beginning in the 1930s, Iran was one of the areas of the world where some of the earliest pioneering attempts were made to use aerial photography to document archaeological sites. The classic volume Flights Over Ancient Cities of Iran by Erich F. Schmidt (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1940) online gratis [...]. (the other was the 1931 Shippee-Johnson Aerial Photography Expedition to Peru). Comparing Schmidt's Iranian black-and-white photos of the early 1930s with Gerstner's 1970s color images provides the reader with stark contrasts and vivid evidence of the changes that have taken place in these ancient cities and the landscape over this relatively short period. Satellite imagery (such as the pioneering United States Geological Survey CORONA photos, 1959-1972, declassified in 1996) [...] covers some of the same area. The advantage of the Schmidt and Gerstner aerial photos is that they were oblique images which also illustrates the terrain and structures in somewhat of a three-dimensional image important to archaeologists. Likewise, comparing these allows a fresh appraisal of prehistoric, Achaemenid Persian, Parthian, Sasanian, and early Islamic sites that were previously documented through the medium of aerial photographs. With these aerial images, one is able to observe much more than you can ever glean from vertical aerial photos or even by visiting these archaeological sites because "invisible" sites on the ground become visible through oblique imaging.
Hence, the Stronach and Mousavi volume with Gerstner's superb aerial views and the latest background information about the ecology and archaeological sites. The contents following the editors' "Introduction," include an important the first chapter by Tony J. Wilkerson "Earth and Water: The Land of Iran" (pp. 12-27) providing a context for the subsequent contributions: Ali Mousavi and the late William M. Sumner "Land before Memory: Prehistoric Iran (6000-100 BC)" pp. 28-38, with emphasis focused on Tepe Yahya, Tall-e Bakun, Tepe Hissar, Turang Tepe, Shah Tepe, and Tall-e Malyan. Stronach's "Builders for the Ages: Elamites, Medes, Achaemenids, and Parthians (1500 BC-224 AD)" pp. 39-75, documents the sites of Choga Zanbil, Hasanlu, Zendan-e Sulieman, Bastam,dan, Ziwiye, Tepe Nush-e Jan, Godin Tepe, Hamadan, Pasargadae, Susa, Persepolis, Naqsh-e Rustan, Dahan-e Ghulaman, Shahr-e Qumis, and Qalh-e Yazdigird. Dietrich Huff's "Palaces, Fortresses and Fire Temples: Archaeological Sites of Sasanian (AD 224-651) and Later Date," pp. 76-109, characterizes the sites of Atesgah, Qaleh-e Sukhtar, Ardasjir Khurreh, the Firuzabad Great Palace, Bishapur, Eivan-e Kharkeh, Qasr-e Shirin, Kangavar, Takh-e Sulieman (sacked by the Byzantine Emperor, Heraclius in the seventh century CE), and the Gorgon wall among other sites. Mousavi also contributed "Bricks, Tiles, and Domes: Sites and Monuments Dating from After AD 651" (pp. 110-155), describing the sites of Bam, Nishapur, Mashad, Tus, Sangbast, Gonbad-e Qabus, Kashmar, Isfahan, Gird Kuh, Yazad, Hormus, Bampur, Shiraz, Siraf, and others up to the twentieth century. Michael Harveson and Elizabeth Beazley review "Vernacular Architecture: Iran's Working Buildings from the Air" (pp. 156-182), including the sites of Gerash, Sirjan, Yazad, Neyriz, Band-e Amir, and another half dozen loci. Georg Gerster provides a brief "Afterword" (pp. 183-184).
Although some may regard this volume as a "coffee-table" book written and illustrated by the best experts in the field of Iranian archaeology and architecture, there are significant contributions to vernacular mud-brick architecture. It is a highly significant contribution to Persian Iranian archaeology, the built environment, urban history, ecology and settlement pattern, and aerial and archaeological photography. Archaeologists and historians working in Central Asia, highland Mesoamerica, and western South America can also learn much from this important, beautifully-illustrated synthesis of Iranian archaeology.

Wonderful pictures of Iranian cities and monuments

This is a "coffee-table" book written and illustrated by the best experts in the field of Iranian archaeology. Various facets of Iranian geography is presented by T. Wilkinson, while a chapter on the prehistory of Iran is written by W. Sumner and A. Mousavi, followed by chapters on the great empires of ancient Iran (Elam, Median kingdom, the Persian empires) written by D. Stronach and D. Huff respectively. A charming title, Bricks, Tiles, and Domes, by A. Mousavi opens the eye of the reader to beautiful medieval cities and monuments after the Islamic conquest of Iran. A chapter on the vernacular architecture is a nice treat to the amazing mud-brick vestiges of the country such badgirs, abanbar, yakhchal etc. The captivating aerial views are from Georg Gerster, the famous Swiss photographer. The quality of this publication is amazing. An extremely well-published and informative book for whoever interested in archaeology, architecture, and town-planning.
