LDS Approaches to Prayer

This edited volume contains seventeen short articles and three poems about prayer. They are written from the perspective of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and are most accessible to readers familiar with that tradition. Many have previously appeared in reports of the Church's annual conference or in the Ensign magazine.

N. Eldon Tanner introduces the collection with two thoughts. First, that we will live our lives with greater care if we remember that we will be accountable to our Father in heaven. The second is that "Our Father in heaven knows our needs better than we. He knows what is for our good and the things we need to overcome in order to further our development and progression. We must learn to accept his will in all things, with the faith and assurance that in the end everything he does for us will redound to our good."

Three of the more thought-provoking articles are:

Marion D. Hanks' "Preparation for Prayer" reviews different activities that ready the heart, mind, and spirit for meaningful prayer. He reviews examples from the lives of Enos, Nephi, Oliver Cowdery and Moroni. Hanks reviews a number of activities, ranging from thoughtfully thinking through our problems and their potential solutions to contemplating the beauty of the natural world.

Neal A. Maxwell's "What Should We Pray For?" explores the range of topics possible in the conversation of prayer. He emphasizes the importance of being in tune with the Spirit so that we can be inspired to pray for those things we need most. We are reminded of the importance and purposes of praying for the welfare of others.

Hartman Rector, Jr.'s "Our Prayers in Public" discusses the responsibilities of praying on behalf of others in a group setting. It is most appropriate to speak in harmony with the feelings of the group, expressing gratitude and making requests that reflect the meeting or activity the group is engaged in. Flowery language or personal matters should be avoided.

These are well-written articles that contain some genuine insights into the nature of prayer. They are worthy of thoughtful consideration.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed all the talks in this book. They cover many subjects related to prayer; such as the words we use to pray, family prayer, the power of prayer, and great people who have prayed. Many of the talks contained quotes I have heard people say before but I had not read where they came from. I enjoyed the thoughts and insights in this book. The book also contains a contents page and index to help you look for specific topics.

I purchased this book a couple of years ago at a bookstore that I worked at. It is an absolutely wonderful book on this subject "Prayer". It is a must for those of you who want to be more in tune with our Father in Heaven. The authors are all inspired men and in tune with Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. The contents will help the reader also become more in tune with our Heavenly Father and the importance of prayer and why communicating with our Father in Heaven is something that He wants us to do.

In the preface of “Answering Jihad”, Dr. Nabeel Qureshi says that when it comes to the topics of Islam and jihad, “There is too much confusion, too much misdirected anger, too much misinformation, too little balance, and too little grace to remain silent any longer.” That’s why I wanted a book like this one and I can full-heartedly say that the author does a magnificent job of bringing the much needed clarity, reason and the grace of God to our dialogue about Islam in our times.

Because Nabeel grew up in a devout Muslim family he has a solid and reputable background to speak from. His father was an officer in the US Navy, so the author is able to speak for the followers of Islam who love and support America. Nabeel was not your average follower of Islam, but one who studied in depth the teachings of his parents’ faith from childhood and defended it with passion well into his college days. However, during his pre-med studies he developed a great friendship with a fellow student that led to his conversion to Christianity. (Read “Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus”.) That change of heart and mind has taken Dr. Qureshi into being one of the leading voices in Christian apologetics with RZIM and during his presentations Nabeel is asked probing questions regarding Islam, jihad and how we should respond to Muslims, to the mid-east wars and the needs of the refugees.

In “Answering Jihad” Dr. Qureshi addresses eighteen key questions he has heard around the world and to give us the answers we are looking for without the anger, the bias, the politics and false assumptions that are so often presented in the media. The book is well written and presented in such a way you will not need a degree in theology or in social-sciences to follow along. There are also four very helpful appendices to assist the reader in understanding more.

If you are looking for clear answers as to why not all followers of Islam are the same, why all Muslims are not violent and why we can and should move forward with wisdom and compassion, then this book of only a 173 pages is for you. As a pastor I plan to buy a copy for every family in my church. It’s not liberal or conservative thought that Nabeel is sharing, but the Spirit of Christ at work in our hearts and in the times we are living.

Careful, Clear, and Compassionate

I was thoroughly impressed with this brief book on a very tough topic. In less than 200 pages, Qureshi carefully, clearly, and compassionately explained the details of jihad along with other related topics. Having been raised in a devout Muslim home, Qureshi speaks knowledgeably about these things. In three parts the book answers 18 questions. I won't list them all, but here's a sample:

Part 1: The Origins of Jihad. What is Jihad? What is Sharia? Was Islam Spread by the Sword?
Part 2: Jihad Today: What is Radical Islam? Who are Al-Qaida, ISIS, and Boko Haram? Why are Muslims Being Radicalized?
Part 3: Jihad in Judeo-Christian Context: Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? What Does Jesus Teach About Violence?

There are also four appendices that give some more detail on these topics, such as a description of the caliphate and a timeline of jihad in Islam.

This book stood out to me because Qureshi is a very good writer - though the book isn't too long, he explains the issues in a very readable way. There are some details, so it may not be for casual readers, but shorter chapters help make it easier to read. It was also refreshing to feel Qureshi's compassion throughout the book: though he is truthful about Islamic teaching, he does not smear Muslims or disrespect them. The book was written from a Christian perspective, but I believe anyone would benefit from it. In my opinion, Qureshi is a level-headed thinker and it very much shows up in the book.

Finally, the book is quite up to date: the publisher and editors almost set records in publishing it so quickly! And, despite quick publishing, I didn't find any typos or errors. I'm thoroughly pleased with this book, and highly recommend it along with Qureshi's other work, "Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus."

Enlightening and helpful

It's easy to follow and well written. It could do with more thorough referencing to statements of truth or understanding made by the author that I suppose a well educated and devout Muslim would already presume. But I'm a little uncomfortable with presumptive statements without some form of reference or guiding explanation for why a particular view or understanding can be stated as being true for a group of people. The arguments are explained well and based on my own experience with Muslim students in our local community and state university, I think the author is being objective and truthful in his assessment of the current movements among more fundamentalist practitioners of Islam.

This book is intended for an international audience of practicing and future managers. It is written in English, the international language of business. The subject is marketing channels, the companies that come together to bring products and services from their point of origin to the point of consumption. Marketing channels are the downstream part of a value chain. The originator of goods or services gains access to a market through marketing channels. Channels of distribution are a critical element of business strategy.

The ideas in this book apply to any channel for any product or service in any market. The generality of the book is shown in its many examples taken from all over the world. These cover a wealth of different products and services, sold to businesses and consumers, selected from the worldwide business press, research, and consulting. Some examples are autopsies; dog and cat food; personal computers; pleasure boats; dolls; stereo speakers; fast food; tires; garden products; fast-moving consumer goods; maternity clothing; uninterruptible power supplies; maintenance, repair, and operating (MRO) goods; furniture; automobiles; airline travel services; and mutual funds. The variety of the list reinforces the generality of the principles. As is appropriate for an international readership, the presentation of each example is as though the reader is unfamiliar with the product or market in question. This book covers the highlights needed to frame the problem, then covers the channel issues in the examples. Channel Sketches provide detailed examples to improve the readability of the main text.

Each chapter is designed to stand on its own. The chapters may be read in any order, and any chapter may be omitted. Each chapter is of a length that can be assigned for a single class or read in one sitting with a single issue in mind. The chapters are designed modularly. Essential definitions are repeated where necessary so that the reader is free to choose one chapter and defer or omit another. Reference is made to other chapters when appropriate for the reader to go further into any topic raised in the chapter at hand. In this way, the reader can select how deeply to delve into all the sections of the book that most closely fit the problem under consideration.

The content of each chapter comes from the best of current research and practice. This book covers a vast and varied literature, bringing in findings, practice, and viewpoints from multiple disciplines (marketing, strategy, economics, sociology, law, political science) and from the best practices of channel managers worldwide. In presenting these works, the focus is on framing the problem and its solution in the language of business rather than on the technical aspects of the research. Yet the book introduces technical vocabulary in the appropriate instances for the manager. The theory, data, and methods that underlie the content of this book are not detailed. Instead, the relevant references are liberally noted and tied to the content, so that the interested reader may delve further into specific points.

The text is organized into four parts. Part One, "Introduction and Analytic Framework for the Book," introduces the basic ideas and concepts underlying channel analysis. It explains why specialized institutions and agencies have emerged to assist in the task of making goods and services available for industrial, institutional, and household consumption. Among the more critical concepts introduced in Chapter 1 are the notions of "service outputs" and marketing "flows" on which the remainder of the book relies heavily. Chapter 2 provides a coherent framework for building, maintaining, and analyzing channel structure and function. It includes demand-side analysis, supplyside analysis of both channel flows and channel structures, the analysis of gaps on the demand and supply sides, and responses by channel managers concerning the creation or modification of channel structures to meet target segments' needs. It also emphasizes the importance of ongoing management and coordination of the channel through the use of channel power sources and the recognition and management of channel conflict. This framework unifies the discussion throughout the rest of the book and forms the basis for the book's approach to channel design and management.

Part Two, "Channel Design: Demand, Supply, and Channel Structure," develops the framework for channel creation or modification. Chapter 3 focuses on the demand side by discussing how to segment a market for the purposes of channel design appropriately, using the core concept of service output demands. Chapter 4 turns to the supply side of the channel, introducing the concept of channel flows to describe the work done by channel members. This chapter emphasizes the importance of distributing flow responsibilities to channel members who can perform them most efficiently. Not only is the allocation of flows important, so is the issue of channel structure. This is the topic of Chapter 5, which discusses the types of firms that can and should be included in the channel, how broadly distributed the channel's products should be, and who specifically should be a member of the channel. Chapter 6 brings together the demand and supply sides through a discussion of gap analysis, whereby gaps can exist on the demand side, the supply side, or both. Sources of gaps, types of gaps, and methods of closing channel gaps are all discussed. Chapter 7 discusses a key issue in channel structure: whether to vertically integrate the channel. This chapter covers the make-or-buy issue in channels, as well as the decision whether to adopt an intermediate solution. These options blend the features of make and of buy. The next part of the book covers how to create such a midrange solution.

Part Three "Channel Coordination and Implementation," discusses how to get all the members of a channel to work in concert with one another. Concerted or coordinated action does not happen naturally in a marketing channel. This part covers how to overcome this problem by crafting channels that function smoothly in pursuit of common goals. Power is the subject of Chapter 8, which examines how to obtain the potential for influence—and how to use it. Of course, channels are full of conflict, as discussed in Chapter 9. Here, the emphasis is on how to diagnose the true sources of conflict and how to direct conflict to use it as a constructive force for change. A fundamental issue underlying almost every attempt to coordinate a channel is how thoroughly a marketplace is covered (how many places a customer could buy a product or service). The intensity of distribution is related to vertical restraints (such as tying contracts and resale price maintenance) and to how many brands a channel member carries (the degree of exclusivity in dealing). These topics are the subject of Chapter 10. Power, conflict, and intensity of distribution all turn on how to influence channel members. The ultimate form of influence is to forge a strategic alliance in a channel, covered in Chapter 11. Because efforts to coordinate often run afoul of the law, the legal environment (Chapter 12) closes this part.

Part Four, "Channel Institutions," describes and evaluates the predominant institutional forms at each level of a marketing channel. The retailing level has a great variety of form: The major issues and challenges confronting them are discussed in Chapter 13. This chapter focuses on physical stores, which customers visit. Chapter 14 covers the rapidly growing nonstore alternatives, including electronic channels, catalogs, and direct selling. Further up in the value-added chain is the wholesaling sector, the subject of Chapter 15. A critical element of value added in marketing channels is logistics and sup-, ply chain management, the topic of Chapter 16. Finally, Chapter 17 deals with the fascinating, complex, and inherently contradictory channel institution of franchising, discussing how, when, and why franchising works.

The sixth edition differs from the fifth edition in its organization of material, but not in its philosophical underpinning. The framework for analysis is presented first, followed by institutionally oriented chapters, rather than the reverse, as in the fifth edition. The framework is also expanded over more chapters, each of which can be the focus of a single course session. The book is significantly internationalized throughout, reflecting the importance of channel management issues throughout the world. This edition also provides extensive coverage of the impact of electronic commerce on channel design and management, both in examples in each chapter and in the separate treatment of the issue in Chapter 14.

Great update for a seminal book (REVIEW UPDATE: March 23, 2006)

Marketing Channels is a must-own for any executive who thinks strategically about the way in which customers buy their company's products.

Like the sixth edition, the seventh edition is organized around a comprehensive framework for channel strategy. Each chapter walks through a different element of the framework. This approach integrates a wide range of material while making it easy to sample just the strategic topics that are relevant to your business.

The seventh edition continues the evolution of the book toward an approach well-grounded in the real-world economics of channels. Much of the content has been carried over from the sixth edition, although the book's structure is more streamlined. A lot of superfluous and outdated material from earlier editions has finally been cleaned up.

The chapter on vertical integration has been rightly moved into the "Channel Implementation" section. This is an outstanding chapter that provides a truly unique synthesis of marketing strategy and economic reasoning.

I have only two minor quibbles. One, the book is beginning to lag behind actual management practice. For instance, the discussion of margin vs. fee payments, new to the seventh edition, receives a scant four paragraphs. Two, the chapters on channel institutions (Retailing, Wholesaling, and Logistics) should either be expanded or more closely integrated with examples in the text. In addition, the data presented in these chapters are often out-of-date, in some cases by more than ten years.

As both a channel strategy consultant and one of Erin's former students, I can personally vouch for the validity of their insights into channel strategy. You will not be disappointed by the quality and rigor of thinking in this book.

Comprehensive book for channel explanations

This book is very well structured with a good logic flow, examples and explanation of channel from design to conflict to power etc. Anyone who is interested in learning channels, distribution, retail, should get a copy of this book. The language is a bit dry, though it is expected for a text book, it is a little harder for me to digest the material because of the writing therefore four stars instead of five. However, a comprehensive book overall!

This edition is really a significant leap forward with so many great examples bringing the framework and principles to life. All the other changes help to broaden the readership appeal and increase the book's usability.

For me, this is the definitive text in the emerging discipline of routes to market and is of tremendous value to channels managers, marketing managers and anyone responsible for their organisation's routes to market.

In fact, never mind the marketeers, every CEO should be required to read it.

How do we love this man?

Never in my life do I remember being so captured by by a series.All of the books have kept me reading.I have new glasses and can barely see to read, I'll need to have them tested by another Dr.But back to the books,I saw the first movie in the197os,didn't' read another book of his for 20 years! I had to read the book and found out what I had been missing.Thank the powers that be. Elizabeth Loudon.

Scientific and mundane awe -- An excellent book!

2061 is one of my favorite science fiction books. I love the way it goes into technical detail. (If you know of science fiction that has more technical detail, please e-mail it to me!)
This book had potential to degenerate into a horror book. It didn't take that route, and for me that made it more eerie. You need to suspend disbelief for this book. In real life humankind has not had any widely observed direct evidence of extraterrestrial life or a "creator". In this book series, humanity finds such evidence... when Jupiter becomes a small star and the Discovery's computer sends a mysterious message calling for humans to make peace and granting humans permission to explore the solar system with the exception of Europa-- no other commandments or explanations. Humankind knows it's powerless against something that could create a star, and so it obeys the monolith's laconic directives.
Imagine the scene at the end of the movie 2010. We are shown that Euopa is changing thanks to Jupiter having been turned into a sun. We see water an plant life. In the distance we hear movement. Could animal life have developed? Although it looks like a swamp, we know the atmosphere is mostly methane-- the environment is nothing like anything on Earth. Then we see the monolith silently towering over the swamp, influencing it perhaps as it influenced Earth a billion years ago. Now for 50 years human kind has diffidently avoided Europa. There has been no further activity associated with the monolith. They have tired to observe from a distance, but clouds of vapor resulting from the heat of Jupiter obscure Europa most of the time. Humans are getting more and more daring about how close to Europa they venture. In this book, humans decide to risk sending down a probe. While they're launching the probe, a hijacking forces them to land on this forbidden planet. The stranded researchers focus on staying alive and cautiously exploring Europa while they are waiting for a rescue. They come in contact with many natural phenomena and one supernatural phenomenon.
If you can imagine contact with something as powerful and laconic as the monolith appearing and you can imagine the awesome temptation to study it while trying to remain as dispassionate as possible, you will really enjoy this book.

Essential single-volume history of the EU

May I recommend (though not 100% wholeheartedly) The Great Deception by Christopher Booker & Richard North. (First published 2003. New edn 2005 - possibly there's a newer one by now). This book goes right back to the roots. It puts most of the blame on Monnet, who acted through various others who generally wanted, and got, the attention; the original idea coming from Salter (civil servant influenced by international control of shipping) and Monnet himself (rather shady uncreative businessman, more interested in sales and secret deals than productivity) - these two types of person seem to have established the pattern. I think there was an unconscious wartime input: de Gaulle and others were treated as governments-in-waiting or in exile, which established a pattern in which unelected groups formed shadow 'governments'.

This book disentangles many myths - the sort of thing vaguely remembered from incompetent and inchoate BBC programmes. Such as the myth of the post-war carve-up - in fact the federal ideas were thought of much earlier, but one of the main arguments for federation - that it would prevent war in Europe - clearly hadn't worked. Another myth is about Britain and CAP; the French would not accept Britain unless we accepted huge sums for French farming, which of course was a bit pointless from our point of view. Britain as a slow foot-dragger was the message. Fascinating to read how the 'supranational' idea was disguised and hidden by euphemisms: the intent all along was undemocratic. There's an alphabet soup of organisations, mostly with 'E' in - Council of Europe, ESDP, EDC, EDB, EIB, EMS, etc etc. These helped kill off other approaches to Europe - supernational, free trade, etc.

Booker & North don't treat the EU in isolation - world events such as Suez and Berlin and the U2 incident and nuclear issues are factored in, often with new information - Suez for example was re-arranged between Israel, UK, and France, but went wrong. Macmillan, Thatcher, Major and others are shown to have never really quite known what was happening.

However, it's not a perfect book; Booker is an unrevised right-winger; I never liked him - he regards for example Dien Bien Phu as a 'disaster'. North I assume to have done much of the research (including from original documents on Internet, and recent material released under 30-year or other rule). The book doesn't mention the Soviet Union at all, incredibly, despite the model it must have provided for decades; nor Russia as a European unit; it's not too good on raw materials - e.g. oil; and north African gas which was one of the motives for inclusion of Africans in Europe. The book mentions, briefly, the CIA's funding, and Bilderberg, and Foundations such as Ford and Rockefeller, though not (yet?) Common Purpose. Briefly, though - the idea the book is full of conspiracy theories is entirely wrong. If anything, there are too few conspiracy theories - for example UKIP gets few mentions, but its failure to do anything much is widely interpreted as it's being a fraudulent party invented to waste votes. Booker and North seem not very good on law - how on earth such a system be expected to work? Their book does not disentangle exactly why the USA opposed 'communism' - if indeed it did. It has a few pages on immigration.

But it's a handy and hefty one-volume reference/ source/ account. It has a twenty-page detailed index which in a book of this size is a very valuable enhancement. It is in places hard going, but the fact is, much of the analysis necessarily deals with bureaucratic language, or the language of politicians with a long tradition of evasive wording, or conventionalised phrasing designed to disguise or soften actualities. Booker & North's writing is always better than the material they have to deal with - their presentation is probably about as good as it could be. Considering the bulk of this book, it's cheap, too. Excellent study of EU attempt to destroy Britain

This is a remarkable and well-researched history of the European Union from its origins immediately after the First World War to its present efforts to give itself a Constitution. The book lays bare the tactics of the quislings who are more loyal to the EU than to Britain, the Tory Europhiles, for example, who split their own party to assist the more Europhile Labour Party to win the 1997 election.
The EU is not about sharing or cooperation between sovereign governments. It is not inter-governmental, but supranational. The dividing line is the veto: where there are vetoes, there is inter-governmentalism; with vetoes gone, there is only a new, supranational form of government "beyond the control of national governments, politicians or electorates. Nation states, governments and parliaments could be left in place: but only so that they could gradually become subordinated to a new supranational government which was above them all." It has been a slow-motion coup d'etat.
The single currency was designed to unite the new state: as the EU's founder Jean Monnet said, "Via money Europe could become political in five years." German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said, "Currency, security and constitution, those are the three essential components of the sovereignty of modern nation states, and the introduction of the euro constituted the first move towards their communitarisation in the EU." EU President Romano Prodi said, "The Single Market was the theme of the 80s; the single currency was the theme of the 90s; we must now face the difficult task of moving towards a single economy and political unity."
How has EU membership affected Britain? Our industries have become expendable; for example, at the time of entry, a senior civil servant in the Scottish fisheries department advised ministers not to go into any detail on the damage caused to the fishing industry: "The more one is drawn into such explanations, the more difficult it is to avoid exposing the weaknesses of the inshore fisheries position, the only answer to which may be that in the wider context they must be regarded as expendable."
We do not need the EU. The National Institute for Economic and Social Research found that withdrawing from the EU would not cost jobs. The Independent reported this as `8 million jobs could be lost if Britain quits EU' (18 February 2000). The NIESR's director, Dr Martin Weale, responded that the Independent's claim was "absurd ... pure Goebbels. In many years of academic research I cannot recall such a wilful distortion of the facts." In the subsequent discussion, Gordon Brown claimed, "750,000 British companies export from Britain to Europe": the government's own figure was 18,000.
The British working class's resolute hostility to the euro has defeated that EU attack. The EU's rulers and their quislings are coming back at us by trying to ram through their new Constitution and by imposing regionalisation. We must reject these assaults too.

Booker and North have done yeoman work in exploring scores of original sources related to the modern European Union. Most impressively, they have returned to the 1920s, when the contemporary notion of "European Union" began. They note that an element of deception has been present since the very earliest years of the project, demonstrating that the idea's early exponents believed that their utopian ideals, whilst admirable, ought to be realized without the knowledge or participation of the member countries' peoples. In fact, Booker and North reveal that a strong tendency of the strain of Unionists which created the present Brussels regime has been to shun democracy by creating a supranational authority with no meaningful accountability to the people, whilst simultaneously subverting individual states' national sovereignty. A thoroughly absorbing and fascinating read, one essential for anyone interested in contemporary European politics. The defeat in France and the Netherlands of the EU constitution has not rendered this book irrelevant; indeed, it provides a warning about the accumulated power of a body still very much in being and still very zealous to reach the consummation of its endeavors.

About the Author

Shawneen M. Gonzalez, D.D.S., M.S., is Assistant Professor and Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Clinic in the College of Dentistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Lincoln, Nebraska. She teaches multiple clinical and didactic oral radiology courses at UNMC, and her research focuses on CBCT uses and education methods of oral and maxillofacial radiology.
