Is Human Intelligence Inherited?

Professor Kamin presented convincing evidence to debunk the commonly held view that human intelligence (I.Q.) is to a large extent inherited. He did this by pointing out, in some cases, fallacious assumptions made by proponents of the hereditary theory and in other cases faulty research design and/or conduct of studies that purport to demonstrate that human I.Q. is mainly determined by inheritance.

Polemical, politicized and misleading

Kamin's books is widely cited (eg by Stephen Jay Gould) as a source for those wishing to 'debunk' the concept of IQ.

I had a good look at it but I did not find it useful because of the way it misleads the reader about the sources. For example, Henry Goddard's paper "MENTAL TESTS AND THE IMMIGRANT" in "The Journal of Delinquency" is supposed to have claimed that Jewish immigrants were mentally defective, based on IQ tests. What does the actual paper say?

"Our study therefore makes no attempt to determine the percentage of feeble-minded among immigrants in general or even of the special groups named - the Jews, Hungarians, Italians and Russians."

The whole book is as unreliable as this.

As a side note, thanks to people like Kamin and Gould , a lot of people are of the few that IQ is a discredited notion. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here is the official position of the American Psychological Association, the premier professional association in the field

"The findings of the task force state that IQ scores do have high predictive validity for individual (but not necessarily population) differences in school achievement. They confirm the predictive validity of IQ for adult occupational status, even when variables such as education and family background have been statistically controlled. They agree that individual (again, not necessarily population) differences in intelligence are substantially influenced by genetics."

Light, fluffy, contemporary

The Truth about Jack was the first great contemporary read of the year that I really enjoyed. The plot, writing, and the characters just really bring together the story.
First off the plot. I went into this book expecting a cute contemporary. I definitely got that. Jack is a boy who finds a message in a bottle from the main girl Dakota who is going through a tough time. Jack decides to lie about who he truly is to get to know Dakota. Both Jack and Dakota are characters I came to love, Jack especially. Jack is a down to Earth musician, a guy I would definitely go for. What I truly love about his character was how honest he was with himself. He realizes falling with a girl after first laying eyes on her is creepy. He isn’t afraid to let his feelings show. That is so rare in a guy which made me appreciate him even more. I definitely enjoyed chapters with his perspective more than Dakota, who nevertheless I still enjoyed. The plot in general was very cutesy. There were a few moments when things got a little dark, but those moments were still nice to read. I knew going in what direction the plot would go and the endgame, but the moments in between still made it good.
Don’t even get me started on this writing. From the very first page of the story I fell in love with the writing. There was something about it that just drew me in. The writing is simple yet elegant, the perfect combination. The writing style was perfect for this type of contemporary.

Judging a Book by it's Cover:
Cute cover with a light-hearted feel. Synopsis reads like a typical YA/NA feel-good drama.
Looking Deeper:
First-person alternating POV in present tense. Dakota grew up in an artist/ hippie community. She's vibrant, caring and not as naive as one would imagine her to be. Jack comes from money. His mother shelters and represses him due to a past tragedy she'd never gotten over. Both characters are young, barely old enough to start college in the fall, but he's already lost his best friend to suicide and she's suffered the ultimate betrayal from her boyfriend and best friend.
Dakota composes a message in a bottle and tosses into the ocean, only unbeknownst to her, it is found only moments later by Jack. Jack first caught sight of Dakota earlier that day and was immediately drawn to her. When he spots her bottle churning in the tide, he takes it as fate. However, he replies to her message under false pretenses and begins a pen pal-ship that is based only on half-truths. Now he needs to figure out how to transition from his pen pal character to the real Jack without ruining everything.
The characters are young. They both have some maturing and learning to do, especially Jack - but I blame a lot of that on his mother, too. There are several secondary characters in this story, all which seem to benefit the plot in one way or another without threatening to steal the spotlight. There's a natural and easy way about the dialogue and interaction that was nice, even the intentional awkwardness was conveyed well. While the plot progresses slow and steady, the writing style is fluid and easy to read. There were a handful of conflicts that were resolved in timely and age-appropriate manners. Predictability was low. The conclusion included a solid epilogue that added to the story nicely. Overall, a it was a fun, light read catering more to the teen and young adult crowd.

Love Jody Gehrman, love this book!

The Truth About Jack is the latest from Jody Gehrman, author of the Audrey's Guide books. It is told from the altering points of view of Jack and Dakota, two teenagers with very different voices.

The author is great at creating complex characters, characters with their own stories and issues and little quirks. There were many moments that a character behaved in a somewhat questionable way, but there were other moments in the history of the character that would ecplain it, turing the questionable behavior into something more sympathetic.

Jack's character is the epitome of this. There were moments when he came off as more than a little obsessive, a little stalkerish, a little to instalove. But, in reality, he was a bit on the dysfunctional side. He had had some issues with his family, with school, with life, and it left him isolated and insecure. There were times when I just couldn't get behind him as a character... until something was said that reminded me of the things he had been through. Then everything fell into place and I just wanted to hug him and root for him. Dakota, too, had been through her own fair share of drama recently and was just as scarred as Jack, albeit in a different way. She had been betrayed and it left her with trust issues that aren't helped along by more lies.

Dakota and Jack are such completely different characters, from totally opposite ends of the spectrum. He is privleged and sheltered, while she grew up in an artists' colony with much more freedom than most. The one thing they share is a love of creativity, Jack in music and Dakota in art. The altering points of view really underscored the differences, and the similarities, between them. I don't think that the story just couldn't have been told nearly as effectively with any other form of narration.

My Recommendation: This is a book that had happy moments, sad moments, funny moments, and even some creepy moments. But what made it a good read were Jack and Dakota, two very different characters that were richly created. Definitely a recommend!

Great for self acceptance and humor

While so many find Trinny and Susannah brutally honest, i find them fun and informative. The Body Shape Bible which I purchased from Amazom.com, allows one to take an honest look at oneself and one's friends and see that looking good has more to do with self awareness than being born perfect. I love that they use normal looking people for their how to photos and then use famous people when they've dressed to accentuate their shape and when they looked far less than great. They also have a good laugh at themselves. I am a classic hourglass, and finding clothes has always been difficult. I have often tried to camouflage my curves with oversized flowing clothes that only added twenty pounds or more to my appearance. I recently bought a va va voom red dress with flutter sleeves, form fitting a la Marilyn Monroe and Christina Hendricks, and I received so many compliments. I'm sixty five and haven't had so much attention since I was twenty. Buy this book for you and your friends. It helps you love yourself as you are, laugh at what's not so great, and see the potential in those around you.

Could Have Been Much Better

As a fan of Trinny and Susannah, I have always appreciated their guidance on how to dress for your specific body type. I found this book to be covering the same information, except not as well presented as in previous books.

Once you discover your body type, you can really only use 15 or so pages out of entire 288 page book. You are offered only 3 looks as ideal for your shape, Casual, Smart, and Party. I would have appreciated more, especially considering some of the outfits were not seasonally appropriate. And as I flipped through the information on other body types, it was noticable that things such as swimsuits and accessories where discussed with some body types and not others. This should have been addressed with every body type.

Also, because this book is shipped from the UK, the shopping section becomes useless since they recommend shops within the United Kingdom only, unless you anticipate traveling overseas soon. The shopping guide in "T & S The Survival Guide" is far superior. Perhaps an updated US version will be offered later. Wait and buy it then.

When David dreams that his infant daughter will drown in a flood as he tries to save her, he comes undone. He travels thousands of miles, fleeing family, home, and the future itself, to deny the dream.

On a Caribbean island, destitute, alone, and unsure if his child has survived or his wife can forgive him, David is sheltered by a couple with a daughter of their own. Ultimately it is she who will pull him back into the world, to search for the people he left behind.

Doerr's characters are full of grief and longing but also replete with grace. His compassion for human frailty is extraordinarily moving. Unsettling and beautiful

I was initially conflicted over purchasing this book based on some of the reviews I read; however, I could not resist the synopsis and had to find out for myself what this book was all about.

I did not find this work to be disappointing in the least. I would describe the book as haunting, OBSESSIVE, and tender, wrapped in cloaks of great love and forgiveness. It is an amazing physical and emotional journey of a man with an unusual gift that often torments him and plunges him into the throes of despair and ruin. At the same time, his eyes are opened to the little yet significant miracles that surround him everyday.

This book is written in a lovely prose with painstaking descriptions of articles of everyday life. It is continuously unsettling and maintains the reader's attention to the very end. A very fine work and highly recommended!

An American Haruki Murakami...

I just finished this novel on a trip back from Phoenix, and I have to say not only the style and description, but the plot itself grabbed me. Unlike other reviews here, I found nothing plodding about the story. I found it riveting, and full of surprises. I'm a big fan of Japanese author Haruki Murakami, and I found a numbeer of similarities in both the beauty of the language, as well thematic and plot. There are elements of a surreal sort of journey and a search for a missing life that spans across thousands of miles. Doerr does a great job of shifting his tale between several key time periods in the life of David Winkler, the main character of the story. This is a brilliant novel, and I plan to share it with friends.

I loved this book

I loved this book. At the same time I can understand why it got so many bad reviews. The prose is exquisite and it is a delight to read. Doerr writes so vividly that we are offered beautiful vignettes in every page. On the other hand the critique that not much happens is also true. This is a book about a person's internal process and experience. I would and probably will read it again. If you love prose that sings like poetry then this book is for you. If you want a fast-paced, rapid-fire, event-filled story then you will be disappointed.
