About the Author
Shelia Graber has been working in the animation field for many years. She is an art and animation teacher and has been commissioned to make animations by a long list of institutions including the Tate Gallery (London), NFT and Tyneside Cinema. She creates animation for websites (e.g. International Website for the Deaf with Granada TV) and also works with the police creating animation resources for their Young Offenders Programme. Sheila has won awards for her animated short films at both the London Film Festival and Cannes. She is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Sunderland, and she also runs an animation company with her colleague Jen Miller.

An animation Script Writer's view

Sheila Graber's book `Animation - A handy guide' is both welcome and timely. The book is a guide, as against a manual, and approaches the subject conceptually and historically so that the reader gets a feeling for the ideas that animation is best suited to, and importantly, the fun of animating for its own sake; anyone who has taught children to animate will know the delight and amazement they find in seeing their first attempts work. The book is well and profusely illustrated, and presented in a conversational way that is easy to read and understand. Though stating that it is aimed at professionals, students, and total beginners, my guess is the market is more likely to be in education as animation is now regarded and an `enabling skill' along with literacy and numeracy. I would recommend this book to anyone starting out in animation, but also to teachers exploring new ideas, and media professionals who need to get a broad understanding of animation applications and techniques for use in their own field of work.

Great summary of different cultures

It is imperative that health care professionals understand the importance of being culturally competent to provide appropriate holistic care. This book provides a great overview of the major cultures we see in the country and provides a good perspective of how patients feel and see health. To be good advocates for our patients we must know how to approach them and respect their beliefs.

A very, very broad overview. I had to buy it for a class. Would never have bought it on my own. I have a degree in Anthropology, I personally would go with Peter Burke in examining the meaning of culture and Michel Foucault for the nuances of the health care system.

Dubious

This book contains numerous archaic and very questionable cultural
stereotypes with unacceptable evidence behind the cultural
descriptions presented. In many chapters, the only cited resource
behind these assertions is a book the author himself previously
published. There are no footnotes assigned to the plethora of bizarre
and sweeping statements about various "heritages."

I was left wondering how the author knew that the Amish eat cookies of
"about 3 inches in diameter" (p.42) or why the author believes the
modern African-American community largely respects/values "voodoo
doctors" (p.35). Another strange claim made is that people from Appalachia feed their babies grease, sugar,
and coffee (p.55). If we're to believe Purnell, Mexicans are
generally not punctual (p.294) and see being overweight as positive
(p.296). These are but a few of MANY dubious claims with insufficient
sources cited to back them up.

If you have to use this book in a class, think critically before
accepting any unsupported assertions made in this book. Otherwise,
you might find yourself delivering culturally INcompetent health care
in the real world.

About the Author

After completing his PhD in 1988, Geoff accepted his first teaching position at Southern Oregon State College (now Southern Oregon University). After 12 years of teaching, Geoff moved into university administration and is now in his ninth year as Dean and Professor of Education in the School of Education at Southern Oregon University.

Geoff has traveled extensively and given invited action research presentations in Australia, New Zealand, Greenland, the United Kingdom, Canada, and many states in the US. In addition to Action Research: A Guide for the Teacher Researcher, Fourth Edition, Geoff is also the only active author of Educational Research: Competencies for Analysis and Applications (2009) now in its 9th edition.

Good resource

In preparing my action research project for my Masters degree, I found this book to be very helpful and a good resource.
It is not an in-depth book, but it is insightful and helps to narrow your focus and keep you on track in the planning stages of the action research process.
It gives good examples of projects that have been done and the insights gained from those projects.
This book is by far the best of it's kind, although I wish it had just a little more advice for the beginner of the entire process. It is great for planning, but I was left thinking, "now what?" I figured it out, but it took a little doing on my part. The book does have good outside resource lists to help you answer questions you might have.

Too many errors!

I teach graduate level research courses and reviewed this book for the publisher. There are so many errors in this book that I cannot even begin to list them. I could not in all practicality use this book with my students because of the multiple theoretical and conceptual errors. Another reviewer suggested graduate students get the book because it is helpful. As a professor I would not agree. There are many other texts that do a much better job discussing Action Research that are more practical, precise, make relevant connections to practice, and offer theoretical and conceptual accuracies.

This book is invaluable when attempting to set up an action research project. Although geared towards teaching and improving aspects under your control this book would be a great resource for anyone attempting an action research project.

About the Author
Ken Fleming has been an enthusiastic and passionate Bible teacher for more than fifty years. His service for Christ has led him to many parts of the globe, including South Africa, where he spent twenty-five years as a missionary among the Zulu people. From 1977 through 2002, Ken taught in the Bible and Missions programs at Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque, Iowa. Today he continues proclaiming the gospel and strengthening the church body through writing and preaching ministries.

A Different Viewpoint

As a former student of Ken Fleming's, I was required to read this book in one of his classes. I had read "Through the Gates of Splendor" by Elizabeth Elliot, and so figured that it would not be of much interest to me. However, when I did read it, I was fascinated by the different viewpoint that Mr. Fleming takes.

Ken writes from the perspective of a brother who had a close relationship with Pete, even though (at the time of Pete's martyrdom) they were on complete opposite sides of the Earth (Ken was working with the Zulu at the time). He discusses Pete's personality, his working relationship with God and others and his reasonings about giving up a potential career to be a missionary who would have no visible means of support (he did not even have pledges, nor did he request money from others.) He makes great use of Pete's diary and letters to others to develop his memoir.

As a professor, Mr. Fleming has a sharp wit and a strong ability to use language to communicate; this ability comes out in his book. A good read!

A Victorious Trophy of God's Grace!

Page after page of these entries in Peter Fleming's journal give a deep insight into what a man after God's own heart looks like. The process of Pete's spiritual maturity seen in the variety of experiences that each day would bring served to nurture a reflection of God's love through him that was extended toward those whom he would win for Christ. All of these episodes are trophies of God's grace and standards of true discipleship that raise the bar of faith far above the status quo of mere Christian duty. It was the beauty of Christ that drove and sustained him, with a persistence that flowed from the fountainhead of worship. In all of this, the reader is led to see a quality of living that is not out of reach for any heart that is surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ, constrained by His love and held by His hand to fulfill the purpose of His calling in each of us. Thank you, Ken Fleming, for these tender, transparent lessons afforded by your loving display of your brother Pete's faith in practice. To God alone be the glory!

This book was very affecting. Though not particularly well ...

This book was very affecting. Though not particularly well written, and certainly not well translated (the British translator often imposes British idioms that seem misplaced in a book written by a french woman), the overall effect is to leave the reader with a very vivid--and profoundly sad--view of the world of fashion and modeling. The reader's view is rendered all the more vivid by Dauxerre's bold willingness to name names and to tell her stories with reference to specific people and in specific times and places. She is also brutally honest about the depression that consumed her the longer she starved herself and the longer she was objectified, dehumanized, and even when highly in-demand, cast aside, by photographers, designers, and agents. She's also keenly aware of the trickle-down messaging phenomenon in her industry: It is not just models who must size down and sacrifice themselves at the altar of fashion, it is ultimately all women--who see these images and these runway models--who feel compelled to do so. None of this, in the abstract, is particularly surprising or even new to any of us who follow fashion. But the specificity and rawness is bold and fresh, and she has managed to do what few women's magazine op-eds about eating disorders or laws about runway sizes have done: She has deeply humanized the wretched experience. I wish her well.
