This unique first-person account offers a window into the mind of a high-functioning, 27-year-old British autistic savant with Asperger's syndrome. Tammet's ability to think abstractly, deviate from routine, and empathize, interact and communicate with others is impaired, yet he's capable of incredible feats of memorization and mental calculation. Besides being able to effortlessly multiply and divide huge sums in his head with the speed and accuracy of a computer, Tammet, the subject of the 2005 documentary Brainman, learned Icelandic in a single week and recited the number pi up to the 22,514th digit, breaking the European record. He also experiences synesthesia, an unusual neurological syndrome that enables him to experience numbers and words as "shapes, colors, textures and motions." *Starred Review* Although Tammet is only 27, his autobiography is as fascinating as Benjamin Franklin's and John Stuart Mill's, both of which are, like his, about the growth of a mind. Not that Tammet is a scientist-statesman or philosopher. He is an autistic savant who can perform hefty arithmetical calculations at lightning speed and acquire speaking competency in a previously unknown language in mere days (the latter capability he used to create the Web-based language-learning systems with which he supports himself). More socially competent and independent than the autistic savant famously played by Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, Tammet shares his peers' strong preferences for routine, peace and quiet, private space, and literalness, as well as aversion to chance occurrences, aural and informational noise, and figurative language (despite his arithmetical gift, he can't do algebra; he reads a lot but never fiction). He learned fellowship very gradually and says he couldn't really acknowledge his eight siblings until he grew up. He also writes some of the clearest prose this side of Hemingway; he tells his story with such concentration, precision, and simplicity that his familial poverty, schooling as a "mainstreamed" student, self-realization as gay, and embracing of Christianity prove as enthralling as they are, ultimately, normal. An astonishing book that will touch and warm your heart

This is an astonishing book, written in first person. It is a memoir of the author's life with the "synaesthesia and savant syndrome", a rare form of Asperger's syndrome.

People with synaethesia see numbers as forms with color and texture, and days as vivid colors, and so Daniel Tammet has the ability to see in his mind numbers and days as colors, each number and day having its own distinct color as an attribute. A day with a color, like a flower with a scent! The blue day of the title of this book refers to Wednesday, which, like the number nine, he sees in his mind as blue. "I know it was a Wednesday," narrates Tammet, "because the date is blue in my mind and Wednesdays are always blue, like the number nine or the sound of loud voices arguing."

Daniel is also a savant, with a remarkable ability to multiply and divide given numbers with astonishing speed. He can recite from memory the number pi, 22 divided by 7, or 3.1428571 to 22,514 decimal places, a feat which will take him a little over five hours! He says numbers are beautiful things, and that pi is as beautiful as Mona Lisa.

Like Christopher John Francis Boone, the fifteen year old hero of Mark Haddon's novel, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time", Daniel, too, is very fond of prime numbers. "Prime numbers feel smooth, like pebbles," he says. He can recognize every prime number up to 9,973. He can speak in ten languages, including Icelandic, Lithuanian and Welsh, and he has the ability to learn a new language within a few days. He learnt Icelandic, for example, within a week; a most remarkable feat for any human being. He doesn't understand jokes easily, and the expressions on human faces he finds baffling. And like Christopher, he doesn't like to be touched.

He is perhaps the only person in this world with the "synaesthesia and savant syndrome" who has written a book in his own words, without using a ghost writer. What causes this syndrome is a mystery to neurologists; they have been trying to unravel the mystery, so far without much success. They speculate that a series of seizures Daniel suffered in his childhood might have caused the savant syndrome. But this is just their speculation; no one knows the real cause.

For a man who sees numbers and days as colors, this book is written in a simple, bland, colorless prose. Nevertheless, reading this book is a marvelous and rewarding experience. This book will touch and warm your heart.

Unique insight

Over the last couple of years there has been an explosion of new and valuable material written on the experience of autism, much of it written from the points of view of either how to deal with an autistic child or a more medical explanation of symptoms. Reading about what it actually feels like to live with autism is very rare. Daniel's ability to so carefully describe to us how he experiences life is highly unusual and must be incredibly valuable to researchers.

Daniel Tammet is still a very young man, and his autobiography is necessarily not going to be very long. Moreover, due to the nature of his condition it was not until very recently that he has had much by way of dealings with the outside world. Much of the book takes place in his own mind, his relationships with numbers, logic, mathematics, chess and puzzles, essentially how his mind organizes its thought. One also finds how the tiniest irregularities in his routines - a dropped spoon, perhaps, or the ring of a cell phone - can not only disrupt his thought but can set him off on a 'meltdown' psychologically and physically, from which recovery may take minutes or hours. Order, quiet, routine, predictability and an internal logic assume incredible importance.

The part of his personality dealing with events outside his own mind is very fragile and stunted. Although Daniel comes across in his writing as a giving, kind and basically generous person, there is a lack of understanding, of feeling, what love, empathy, and interpersonal relations are all about. His discovery of another kind man in Neil, his partner, must have been an inestimable blessing, but no doubt a very rare one for a person with autism, and it has helped him slowly grow. Nonetheless, after all of the sacrifices his family has made - and they are clearly a very loving and supportive family who must have endured much (Daniel is not even their only autistic child), one reads of Daniel's fathers breakdowns and decline into poor health and senses no special bond or understanding, only a clinical detachment. I do not write this to accuse Daniel of not caring; it is part of the condition and Daniel's honesty in writing how he feels (or not) is important.

There are chapters about his setting the records for recitation of pi, of meeting Kim Peel (the real-life subject of the movie Rain Man), of his travels to Iceland and his making of the Brainman movie, interviews of him on Letterman, etc, which are less interesting than the opening discussion of just how he perceives his mind to work. But the last chapter is also fascinating: he reveals his Christianity, somewhat of a surprise, he discusses the impact his reading of G K Chesterton (very well known in Britain but much less so in the States) has had on his life, and ponders the future.

The book is validation for all those who feel alienated, different, and unusual, and show how all can still make their own unique contribution. That Daniel was able to find himself and some satisfaction and happiness will hopefully inspire many others.

Patience, support, love and guts

I learned of Daniel Tammet while listening to him get interviewed on BBC Radio. He spoke of the episode he details toward the end of the book where he learns Icelandic - an extraordinarily difficult language - in the span of about two weeks (only 4 days of tutored training)....well enough to hold a 15-minute interview in that tongue on national television. Tammet has Asperger's Syndrome, making him a functioning autistic. He possesses savant-like capabilities, manifested by his wizardry with calendrical calculations and his successful memorization of pi out to the 22,514th place. Oh, by the way, the recital of the 22,514 digits takes place _in public_ and at Oxford no less. Yikes!

How has Tammet succeeded despite his hardship? The answers are in 'Blue Day': the patience of his parents; the social interaction with eight siblings; the love and support of his partner; and, frankly, some plain old courage and gumption on Tammet's part. After completing school, he volunteers to teach English and is sent abroad to Lithuania. It's there his talent for languages flourishes.

Loved it

So great to read about stories behind many songs that soundtracked a good portion of my life and still continue to do so. Book is full of interesting information from the band and Robert himself. Some cool press clippings and tid-bits, it's very Cure, very eclectic; I loved it. The book ends with Kiss me Kiss Me Kiss me being released, so you never get to masterpiece that is Disintegration, and I would love to read about how that all came about, since it was the album that started me on The Cure and the one that I think is just about a handful of musically perfect creations from the first note to the last. I am hoping that part two of the book will come out. Even so, I had such fun couple of afternoons sifting through the book and listening to each album parallel to reading about it. What a great band, what great music legacy they created, and what interesting driving/creative force Robert Smith is. Always loved him, always will. Recommended for fans, or newcomers to their music.

Answers To A Lot Of Questions

All I can say is thank goodness there is a such thing as satellite radio with wonderful stations such as XM Channel 44 titled 1st Wave. This is the station that already played some of my longtime favorites such as Siouxsie and the Banshees and Kate Bush. It also re-accquanted me with great alternative bands like Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, New Order, and most notably The Cure. The Cure was one of those bands I always seemed to know, yet not. The few tunes that made it to my long ago American Top 40 radio immediately caught my attention as a kid in the 80's, and, strangely enough, I've never not known who Robert Smith was. I must have caught a quick snapshot of him in one of the trillion teeny bop magazines out at the time. I somehow never forgot The Cure's lead vocalist and songwriter. It must have been the Edward Scissorhand aesthetic, which I always found intriguing. Here lately, however, I really began to wonder about this character and his band. By this time I had become very familiar with older singles such as "Killing An Arab", "A Forrest", and "Three Imaginary Boys", and wondered how in the world this band evolved from a rather stark punk sound to the more complex rhythms encountered on tracks such as "Pictures Of You" and "Fascination Street". I decided I needed a good, straight forward guide to answer some questions. I was very happy to find what I was looking for in "Ten Imaginary Years". True, it only covers the first ten years, but jam packed full of interviews of all the members and a great many photos. What I found extremely helpful was the frankness of this biography. It wasn't written to kiss the band's rear. It was very honest in the fact that many critics hated them for not being radio friendly, then questioned integrity when a lighter more juanty tune did break through to the Top 40 charts. On the opposite end, however, this biography was not written as tabloid fodder. Personally, I'm sick and tired of has-been rockers who decide they need pages of a book to spew all their long ago drug induced escapades and groupie trash in order to make the next mortgage payment. Of course, as a group of young guys in the 80's, drugs were around, excessive drinking happened, but as far as information involving significant others, all the members were quite discreet. Bravo! It's about the music these guys have created in their first ten years together, which are, no doubt, some of the most definitive songs of the post-punk era, not how many pieces of trash from the audience came along to the after parties. Again, Bravo! Highly recommended for any Cure-ious fan.

Great insights into a great band's early years

Great insight into the formative and developing years of the enigmatic Cure. Members flow in and out and around Robert Smith as his and their visions evolve, and as they deal with increasing success and fame. Written as a series of direct quotes from the key people involved, including those who left or came back and why. You get a good feel for the intensity, passion, fun and problems directly from the members. A4 size with plenty of early photos this is a great read and bookmark for the early years of this great band.

The 5 Choices INTRODUCTION FEELING BURIED?
Jaivon opened his eyes with a start as the plane shuddered beneath him. He looked around and realized it was just turbulence�.�.�. and that he had fallen asleep again.

He had been dozing on and off for the last hour, trying to stay awake so that he could continue working on his notes. “I’m not supposed to be on this plane at all,” he thought angrily. “I should be at home with Kalisha!” They had gotten married just a few months ago and were in the process of moving into a new home. This trip had come up unexpectedly.

It couldn’t have come at a worse time. Kali had taken some time off from her job to organize the move and he had done the same thing, but one of his company’s largest accounts needed some emergency technical help, and he was the best one to provide it. “At least no one is texting me right now,” he grumbled. “There’s at least one advantage of flying a red-eye.”

As he slid back into his crowded, stuffy middle-row seat, he thought about the past few weeks—one crisis after another. As one of the lead developers in a small but growing software firm, his schedule was hectic. He had also recently taken on more team leadership responsibilities, so now he had more people to satisfy. If it wasn’t questions from the sales team, it was issues from his developers. So many decisions to make! His email, instant messenger, and text messages were filled with questions that, apparently, only he could answer. His life felt like this middle seat—crowded—and the problem was only getting worse.

He was originally excited about the company and its prospects when he took the job two years ago. Their product was a cool bit of software, and it was the kind of programming he liked to do. With Kalisha’s work and his job, they had begun to look for a place where they could finally make a home and maybe start a family. “But at this rate,” he thought, “we won’t be together enough to raise a family at all, much less begin one!”

Kali’s job was busy also. She was in retail and managed a couple of boutique clothing stores. Because they were open into the evening, she usually came home late. And even then, there was often work to do—checking on the next day’s schedules when people called in sick, following up on inventory, and so forth.

As Jaivon rolled all this over in his mind, he began to feel something he hadn’t felt before—despair. “Will this ever end?” he thought.

Does any of this sound familiar?

While this might not match your situation exactly, our guess is that some of it rings true.

When you picked up this book, you probably did it for one of two reasons:

1.�You are looking for some new ideas about how to be more productive. You may actually be managing pretty well, but you want to improve. You want to manage your time better, to get more out of each day. You may want to make more of a difference, to progress in your career, to have more time for those people who are important to you, or to achieve some really important goals.

2.�You feel buried every day, and you want some serious help. You may, however, feel more like Jaivon—struggling to stay above the growing pile of things to do and the demands and decisions coming at you all day long. You may feel out of balance and that you rarely have time for yourself. For many, it seems the more they do, the more comes their way. It’s a never-ending flow of incoming tasks, appointments, obligations, and responsibilities. In some cases, all these things feel like a giant mountain of suffocating gravel pouring over them and threatening to bury them alive.

THE PRODUCTIVITY PARADOX
It has never been easier in human history to accomplish great things. A big part of that is the dramatic increase in the power of technology to make us more productive.

Today’s technology allows a child in Bangladesh to learn algebra from the best teachers on the planet. It allows people from around the globe to instantly see each other’s faces and collaborate in real time. We can access the world’s greatest libraries and publish our own thoughts to people everywhere. Modern technology has enabled people to advance medical practice, decode the human genome, overthrow governments, distribute state secrets, and expose corruption.

With advances in interconnectivity, processing power, and wearable technologies that measure everything from the temperature of our skin to the flow of our blood, the interaction between how we live and think and the technologies we use becomes more inseparable each day. And the revolution is just getting started.

Yet, paradoxically, these same technologies can make it harder than ever to accomplish the things that are important to us.

THE PRODUCTIVITY PARADOX
It is both easier and harder than ever before to achieve extraordinary productivity and feel accomplished in our lives.

The incoming flow of information enabled by today’s technology fills our lives with tasks and demands for our attention which, in the end, may not matter that much. Technology allows anyone who feels like it, anywhere in the world, to drop something into our digital inboxes, requiring us to respond, even if only to say no. We become buried alive by the unstoppable flow of everything that comes our way, which robs us of the energy we could be spending on higher-value activities. In many cases, we have redefined success as simply getting things done on time (barely!) rather than doing the important things with the attention and quality that makes us feel like we are, in fact, doing extraordinary work.

The tech-enabled, hyperpaced nature of our work has impacted our lives to such a degree that people feel overwhelmed like never before. They feel buried in things to do and simultaneously drained of their capacity to do them. They feel agitated and anxious, stressed when they are working and stressed when they are not. It is a semipermanent state of worried restlessness that pervades our culture and drains us of confidence and joy. This is the widespread human cost of the productivity paradox, and it will only become more challenging for people who do not know how to tame the paradox and turn it to their advantage.

The productivity paradox revolves around three critical challenges.
CHALLENGE 1: WE ARE MAKING MORE DECISIONS THAN EVER.
In the early part of the twentieth century as the world was industrializing, huge advances in productivity came from the automation of labor. Work was broken down into small, repeatable tasks on an assembly line that anyone could do. As a result, companies and countries were able to produce goods on a much larger scale. This scaling up of production capability is what built the wealth of the twentieth century.

However, in the twenty-first century, the way value is created has shifted from the manual labor required to put things together to the creative mental labor that designs, engineers, markets, and sells today’s complex processes, services, and products (like software or high-end medical devices). Today’s economic value has shifted from low-decision content work to high-decision content work—from our hands to our brains.

The productivity challenge is that the velocity of incoming decisions required to do our work is almost overwhelming. And what most people do—because they are committed, hard-working people—is that they try to handle this flow in a linear way. They take decisions as they come, handling them one at a time, making them as well and fast as they can, and then moving on to the next one—like an assembly line.



The problem is that high-value decisions don’t come in a predictable order. They are nonlinear opportunities. If we are not aware, we might miss them entirely, or only address them in a rushed, low-quality way. A linear approach in a nonlinear reality is a recipe for failure. Putting our heads down and simply doing more faster does not create extraordinary productivity in a world where value is found in stepping back, prioritizing the choices coming in, and making good decisions on the things that really impact results.

In a telling study cited in the Harvard Business Review, top performers in low-complexity jobs where decision making is at a minimum (like a worker in a fast-food restaurant) were found to be about three times more productive than the lowest performers. In medium-complexity jobs (like a production worker in a high-tech factory), the top performers were found to be twelve times more productive. However, in high-complexity jobs, where the right decisions make all the difference (like a software engineer or an associate in an investment banking firm), the differences between the top and the bottom performers were so profound they were unmeasurable.1



Think about your own work. Doesn’t it feel pretty complex? Are there some areas where the right decisions will make a huge difference in your results? Are you able to devote the time and energy to make these decisions in a quality way?
CHALLENGE 2: OUR ATTENTION IS UNDER UNPRECEDENTED ATTACK.
If the number of decisions we have to make were the only issue, we might have gotten off pretty easily. But there is a second significant challenge: While we are trying to handle all the incoming decisions, our attention is under unprecedented attack. All the beeps, buzzes, and banners that invade our mental space come at a cost to our ability to focus on the things that really matter.

Even your own personal technology can become enemy territory. If you have ever Googled something important and then, forty-five minutes of links later, found yourself watching brainless videos or reading things that had no value to you at all, you have experienced how easily your attention can be taken from you if you are not conscious about it.

The marketing world does a good job of exploiting our natural tendencies toward distraction. Think of the millions of dollars and tens of thousands of hours spent trying to get just thirty seconds of your attention during a Super Bowl or World Cup commercial. Similar effort is spent every day online as marketers’ pop-up ads wiggle, dance, and make silly noises, just trying to get your attention long enough to generate interest so that they can try to sell you something. Our pervasive media ecosystem from news to advertising to the programming aired is basically a war for your most valuable mental resource—your attention. It is driven by dollars or euros or yuan, and the stakes are high. There is plenty of incentive for advertisers to do everything possible to grab your attention, even if only for a moment.

But paying attention to anything for an extended period of time is hard—for individuals and organizations. Even the language we use is insightful. When we say we are paying attention to something, we are recognizing that attention comes at a cost. It takes an investment of energy to attend to something. This is not just figurative; it is biological and neurological. Because attention requires effort, it is far easier to let your brain become distracted by less important things.

Bottom line: If we’re not careful, we can go on mental autopilot, moving from one stimulating and distracting input to another, and miss the things that are uniquely meaningful—the things that can make our days, lives, and relationships extraordinary.
CHALLENGE 3: WE ARE SUFFERING FROM A PERSONAL ENERGY CRISIS.
In the middle of all of the decisions coming at you and the attention-grabbing distractions around you, do you find yourself struggling to think clearly at work? Do you feel worn out much of the time? Do you find yourself relying on stimulants like coffee or those jolting energy drinks just to get through the day? Have you ever finished your workday or workweek and found yourself so exhausted that you slipped into a couch coma, unable to devote any energy to the other people or activities you love?

A productive life is a conscious life, and that takes mental energy. But with today’s technology-enabled unstoppable flow of everything coming at us, we can often feel so worn out and tired that we face our own personal energy crisis. We can’t muster the mental energy to think clearly and, in a knowledge-work world, that is a problem.

Energy management is not just about physical energy, although that is important too; it’s about the raw-energy requirements of performing mental labor. Again, this is not just metaphorical; it is a biological and neurological reality. Your brain needs certain things in order to function well, like glucose and oxygen, and there are a number of factors that influence how well those are supplied to your brain. Yet, our normal work environments are extremely unfriendly to our brains. As brain researcher John Medina notes, today’s cubicled, sedentary workplaces represent “an almost perfect anti-brain working environment.”2 This is true even as we increasingly find ourselves working in highly complex, mentally taxing jobs.
THE IMPACT OF THE PRODUCTIVITY PARADOX
These three roots of the productivity paradox—a streaming flow of unlimited decisions to be made, the second-by-second battle for your attention, and the draining demands on your personal energy—all have a real impact on how accomplished you feel on any day at work, at home, and in your community.

You feel it every day when you come home frazzled, uncertain if you accomplished what you needed to, worried about things you’ve left undone, and dreading the day ahead. You feel it when you look at your life as a whole and realize there are significant areas of your life that you have left neglected, relationships that have not been nurtured, talents that have not been developed, and interests that have not been pursued. You feel it when you think of your potential and the great goals you have, but then feel battered and bruised by all the incoming tasks and demands that seem to always keep you from focusing on those more important things.

These things don’t just show up in your inner experience; they are quantifiable. What if we told you that in a world where we have more opportunity to do great things than ever before, 40 percent—almost half—of your time, attention, and energy is going to unimportant or irrelevant activities?

In a six-year FranklinCovey study, we discovered exactly that. The study was based on 351,613 respondents from Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America. In this research, people indicated that about 60 percent of their time was being spent on important things and about 40 percent was being spent on things that were not important to them or to their companies.3

Think about that for a minute. Now, some might say, “Well, at least it’s more than half!” But what if your car only worked half the time? Would you be satisfied? What about your computer or cell phone? What if only half of the lights worked in your house? Or only half of your bank account or investments were generating a return? What if only half of the players on your favorite team showed up to play for the championship game? You wouldn’t accept situations like that, so why settle for less when it comes to your time?



From an organizational standpoint, this implies that only about half of the money you spend on payroll is being directed toward things that matter to your organization. If you’re a leader, it means that only about half of your team’s energy is being spent moving forward on your most important goals.

Let’s look at some numbers.

Let’s assume, for a moment, that your organization is similar to the global average. Let’s also assume that each person on your team works about 2,080 hours per year, which translates into 40 hours per week. When you apply the 40 percent metric to these work hours, it means 832 hours per year are wasted on unimportant activities for each individual working on your team. Let’s further assume that you are a part of a 500-person organization or division and the average hourly wage across everyone in the division (senior and junior) is $50 per hour. This translates to over $20 million in waste each year.

In our experience, this is the biggest hidden cost in organizations today. It is the cost of people spending their precious time, attention, and energy on things that don’t drive your most important results.

It’s not just a numbers game. Think of the cost to employee engagement and commitment when they come to a job where half of their effort is not spent on important things, where they must battle with all sorts of distractions and demands that keep them from doing their finest work on things that really matter.

This is the very real impact of the productivity paradox. In a time when we are more able than ever to do extraordinary work, it seems harder than ever to get that work done. And this affects our work, our relationships, our sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, even our health.

To be clear, we’re not advocating that everyone turn into a little efficiency factory, working in nonstop production mode 100 percent of the time. That is an Industrial Age, machine-based mindset that is not balanced or even possible or productive in today’s world. What we are talking about is the time and energy you spend on the things that are important to you and your work—the things that will bring you a sense of satisfaction at the end of every day. What if we could increase the amount of time and energy you spend on those things by even a little bit? What if we could change the ratio to 70/30 or even 80/20? What difference would that make in your own work and life?

What if you could get rid of even a few of those annoying things that keep you from doing your best work, that keep you from paying attention to your most important relationships, that get in the way of doing the things that increase your sense of joy, satisfaction, and accomplishment each day?

If you believe, as we do, that your most valuable asset is your life and the time and energy you spend living it each day, doesn’t it make sense that you should be able to spend more of it on things that really matter?
WHAT IS EXTRAORDINARY PRODUCTIVITY?
When we use the word extraordinary, we don’t mean everyone has to broker world peace on Friday and win the Nobel Prize on Monday. What we are talking about is living and working at your best, where you bring your whole self to what you do, and tap into the talents and energies you uniquely have to offer. It means, above all, doing work that you can feel great about.

Now you might be thinking, “Sure, that sounds good, but I have no flexibility in my job, and I just have to get by.” Think back for a moment to the fast-food worker in the study we referenced earlier in this chapter. Visualize the image of this work in your mind. It is a low-complexity position with a highly defined job description, designed to remove decisions, create focused attention, and keep the need for mental energy down to a minimum. You could argue that this is the least knowledge-work-like job on the planet. It really is, you might argue, like an old-time assembly line. And you would be right.

Yet, even in this environment, how can one person be three times more productive than another?

A friend of ours took her lunch break at a retail-chain sandwich shop. Expecting only a sandwich, what she got was an unexpected and unforgettable service experience.

When she first stepped up to order, she noticed a young worker covered in tattoos and body piercings—like many other young adults you can find in a shop like this. But when he greeted her, she instantly noticed his enthusiastic smile and the attention given to her order.

She then watched this young craftsman as he deftly assembled her sandwich with fluid movement that indicated not only a joy in the process, but a mastery of the details—like watching a skilled dancer or a performing artist. It was clear that he had thought through the process and created a sequence of events that allowed him to put forth his finest efforts.

As he finished her order and handed it to her with a sincere thank-you, she realized that she had not experienced a simple worker in an assembly-line job, but a human being making a conscious contribution—a true artisan.

What made the difference?

Even in that tightly controlled scenario, here was someone who had consciously decided what was most important among the things he could influence, focused his attention on them, and brought his finest energy to that work. Underlying that formula was an even more fundamental decision required of all extraordinary work—he had decided to bring his whole self to the job. As a result, his work was significantly more productive, more enjoyable and rewarding to him, and more impactful for those he served.
WHEN HAVE YOU BEEN EXTRAORDINARY?
Compare this to your own work, which likely has much more latitude! When was a time you felt, like this young man, that you were doing extraordinary work? where you were involved in a project or some other effort that brought out your very best? when you put your whole self into it? when you went to bed feeling accomplished at the end of every day?

When you were doing this work, what was your decision making like? What was the quality of your attention? When distractions came up, did you quickly move past them so that you could remain focused on what you were doing? How much energy and clarity of mind did you feel?

Often when we ask these questions in large groups, there is a moment in people’s eyes where you can see a bit of fear: “Have I actually ever done anything like that?”

It’s amazing for us to watch them work to dig up those great accomplishments. People generally are often so busy just trying to handle it all that they don’t even pause to realize what accomplishment really feels like. Then, when they realize there actually were times when they were engaged in doing great work, the energy in the room goes up as they start to relive and share some of the best moments in their lives.

Imagine how it would be if you were able, at the end of every day, to look back on that day and consistently feel the same sense of accomplishment.

A must read if you're a busy person struggling to balance everything coming at you in life.

I read this over the holiday. My wife gave it to me as a gift knowing for the last year I have felt under constant pressure (trying to manage work, my amazing family, a relocation, etc). I can't tell you how refreshing this was and how much it opened my eyes to easy ways I can take back control of my life. Looking at everything I do through the lens of the Time Matrix (framework used in book) has been an instant game changer for me (btw, I spend way too much time in Q1!). Defining roles and goals has also helped. Being able to get clear on what roles I should be focused on instantly took weight off my shoulders. I could go on and on about how each chapter in this book helped me. I'm not a "Time Managment" book connoisseur but I do know that this was extremely powerful and extremely helpful for me (life changing, really). I'm a professional, I have a wife that is a professional and travels for work and we have two small kids. Life is busy and at times extremely stressful. As a family we've become way too connected to our technology (for work and personal stuff) and grown futher away from spending true quality time together. If you can relate to any of this then this book is a must read. My family and I are adopting much of what's in this book and my next step is to take it to my team at work. I believe these concepts can be easily implemented and show very positive results in a short amount of time. Even if we only do HALF of what the books suggests we'll win. I'm not a big reader but this book is staying on my shelf to reference again and again and again.

"The 5 Choices"" is one of the many time management books in the market, but definitely not "the time management classic"

Not as deep and thought-provoking as the time management and life leadership classic by Stephen R. Covey, Roger Merrill and Rebecca Merill, called "First Things First". "The 5 Choices" is a bit too "basic or common sensical" and a typical, nowadays Franklin Covey-style how-to book, not as philosophical or filled with stimulating wisdom literature. Actually "The 5 Choices" is repackaging "First Things First", giving it a new twist or terminology to present time management in a 2.0 or 3.0 fashion to compete with "GTD" (Getting Things Done) in the time management books and seminars arena. Personally, I feel disappointed to see that "First Things First" is the only book by Franklin Covey that does not provide ebook version, and the launching of "The 5 Choices" is meant to be further eroding such possibility of launching "First Things First" ebook version. Actually "10 Natural Laws" (also no ebook version) by Hyrum Smith, previous founder of Franklin is another great time management book, apart from "First Things First". "The Five Choices" talks about Decision, Attention, and Energy Management. But I think it is an "incomplete paradigm" when talking about time management and life leadership, since there is no single mention about "Action Management" whatsoever inside the book. It is "Action Management" that eventually ties Decision, Attention, and Energy Management altogether. Without effective Action Management, all Decision, Attention, and Energy Management are just empty talks, as far as effective and efficient executions are concerned. Personally, I think "The 5 Choices" is one of the many new time management books in the market, but definitely not "the time management classic", a must read like "First Things First" or "10 Natural Laws" in the time management and life leadership field.

I think this book also borrows ideas extensively from books like "Getting Things Done" (GTD), especially the "Quadrant 2 Process Map" in Choice 4, looks like the GTD Process Map a bit, plus books like "Power of Full Engagement" (Energy Management), "Flow" (Extraordinary Productivity), "Thinking Fast and Slow" (Thinking Brain versus Reactive Brain, so called Neuro Science according to the authors here!), professionally it will be great if the authors also referenced or credited those books or authors accordingly!

Also ironically, the cover of the book shows a "Clock" (metaphorically referred as time management, efficiency-focused) instead of a "Compass" (metaphorically referred as life leadership, effectiveness-focused, if using Franklin Covey jargon). Actually Not a single chapter on either mission statement or values clarification too, which is so important in finding one's meaning or purpose in life.

In 1989 Stephen R. Covey published his now famous book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In 2015 three influential executives at Franklin Covey, published this book, The 5 Choices, to take up where Covey left off over 25 years ago.

The 5 Choices focuses on the management of Decision Making, Attention Management and Energy Management on a personal level. Just as Covey sought to provide solutions for business people who were becoming overwhelmed with the demands of work and other life obligations these authors have sought to bring those ideas into the 21st Century. They begin with the assumption that today’s world is more complex, busier, more demanding and more distracting than the world of the 1980s. Among the causes of this greater complexity and distraction are all the digital intrusions and tools that exist today. This book seeks to help us manage those digital intrusions and tools so we can achieve more and be less harried and chaotic in the process.

The book is divided into four main sections: Decision Management, Attention Management, Energy Management and finally Being a Q2 Leader. Each of the three first sections contains subsections which constitute the 5 Choices as follows:

Decision Management:
1. Act on the Important; Don’t React to the Urgent
2. Go for Extraordinary, Don’t Settle for Ordinary

Attention Management:
3. Schedule the Big Rocks, Don’t Schedule the Gravel
4. Rule Technology, Don’t Let it Rule You

Energy Management:
5. Fuel Your Fire, Don’t Burn Out

Choices 1, 3 and 5 are straight out of Covey’s play book. However they are not simply a repeat of the 1989 book. They develop the concepts to a higher level than Covey’s book did and they have updated them to be more relevant to the current world and especially to today’s technology. Choices 2 and 4 are completely new ideas though they too have their roots in Covey’s work. It includes useful ideas on how to manage social media and email and how to avoid those technologies from burying us.

The entire book is built around the Time Matrix that Covey taught about. This concept was not actually invented by Covey, it was invented by Dwight D. Eisenhower and before Covey’s book was called the Eisenhower Box.

The Time Matrix is a tool used to divide all our tasks and activities into four quadrants: Q1 – Urgent and Important; Q2 – Not Urgent and Important; Q3 – Urgent and Not Important; and Q4 – Neither Urgent or Important. The goal is to focus as much time and energy on Q2 activities so as to minimize Q1 and Q3 activities and to get rid of Q4 activity altogether.

What I found useful about this book:

This book takes a fresh look at much of what Covey wrote about and makes it more relevant to the 21st century. The ideas surrounding Q2 activity especially are more helpful and more well developed than anything I’ve seen in this area since 1989.

Equally useful and insightful are the parts that address how to manage technology and make it serve us rather than allow us to serve it. I highly recommend this book.

Readability/Writing Quality:

The book is very well written and well organized. It is easy to read. The authors build upon more basic concepts and develop them more intensely.

Kory Kogon is an executive at Franklin Covey with a lot of experience in management, productivity, and communications.

Adam Merrill is vice president for Innovations at Franklin Covey and has worked in the time management and productivity fields for 25 years.

Leena Rinne is a senior consultant with Franklin Covey with 15 years’ experience in international business. She specializes in client relationship management.

A great story about African resistance, and a mindless race for worthless property.

This is a great story, and the author is to be commended. It reads alot like The Great Game, except that it talks about a different piece of real estate. In this great game, the race is between France, Great Britain, and Belgium's Leopold II. At stake, worthless real estate in southern Sudan. Why?-- so an empire stretching across Africa can be established. For France, this empire would stretch from Guinea to French Somilia. For Great Britain-a Cape to Cairo empire. For Leopold II, a huge empire across the two main river systems in Africa- the Nile and Congo.

The author also establishes that in this Scramble for Africa, resistance occured regularly, whether is was the Ethipians beating up the Italians, or tribes in the Congo Free State resisting the Belgian colonial force. In Sudan, the Madhi threw the Eqyptians and British out. African resistance was high in the Scramble for Africa.

This is a great read for those interested in African history. The author did a great job of weaving facts and stories together for an entertaining read. Highly recommended.

On Fire 1 DO YOU WANT TO DIE?
Life is not about avoiding death; it’s about choosing to really live.

The nurses seem frantic.

They keep telling me everything is okay. That I’m going to be fine. They say they’ll stay with me and there is nothing to worry about.

So why are they racing around me?

Why do they seem panicked?

Why do they continue to poke me and stick me and whisper about me?

I watch them buzzing around me.

Then I look down at my body; it doesn’t look like me.

I look at my hands, but they don’t look like my hands. I look at the remnants of my green sweat suit and tennis shoes; they’ve become one with my arms and legs.

The pain is intense.

The fire this morning changed everything.

Everything.

A nurse says again that it’s going to be okay. I know she’s wrong.

I really messed up today. Today, I blew up my parents’ garage.

I didn’t mean to.

It wasn’t even my fault, really.

It’s just that earlier this week, I watched some older kids in my neighborhood playing with fire. They dripped a little gasoline on the sidewalk, stood back, and then one of the big kids from seventh grade threw a match on top.

The puddle sparked to life.

It was amazing!

I figured if they could do it and get away with it, so could I.

So this morning, with Mom and Dad out of the house, I went into the garage. I lit a small piece of cardboard on fire, walked over to the five-gallon barrel of gasoline, and tilted it to pour a little gasoline on the piece of cardboard.

Just like the older boys, I wanted to make the flame dance.

But the big red barrel was too heavy to lift.

So I set the burning piece of cardboard on the concrete garage floor.

I knelt down, bear-hugged the can, and carefully tilted it toward the flame.

I waited for the liquid to come out.

It never did.

What I remember next was a big boom. The explosion launched me against the wall on the far side of the garage.

My ears rang.

My body hurt.

My clothes were drenched in gasoline.

I was on fire.

I was on fire!

I felt dizzy. Everything around me was ablaze. The only way I could get out of the garage was to go back through the flames.

Yes, I remembered being taught to stop-drop-and-roll.

But I was so scared.

I was in so much pain.

I needed someone to save me.

So I just ran.

I ran through the flames.

I ran up two steps and opened the door to the house. I ran struggling and screaming into the house. Running around downstairs, not sure what else to do. Yelling for someone, anyone, to help me.

I stood in the front hall, screaming.

I was still on fire.

Two of my sisters came down the stairs. They looked at me, covered their faces, and screamed in horror.

Then I saw my older brother, Jim. He raced toward me. He picked up our front doormat and started hitting me with it. He just kept swinging that mat into me. Then he tackled me to the ground, wrapped me in the rug, and carried me outside.

The fire was out.

But the damage was done.

A few minutes later the ambulance came hurtling down the street.

I tried to run to it, but my legs would barely move. So I hobbled. Naked. My skin and clothes had been burned off.

I was so hoping no one would see me.

I was embarrassed. I was scared. I was cold.

I just wanted to get inside.

I climbed in the ambulance and Jim was right behind me, ready to hop in. “Sorry, you can’t come,” the paramedic said as he shut one of the doors.

Jim tried to argue with him, he explained we were brothers, but the man just said, “I am sorry.” And pulled the other door shut.

The ambulance pulled away. Through the back window I watched my brother and two sisters standing in the front yard, smoke rising behind them.

We drove away.

That all happened this morning.

Now I’m here in some emergency room.

Everything has changed.

I feel desperately alone.

And then, I hear a voice in the hallway.

Mom!

Finally!

She always makes everything better. I know she can fix this.

I hear her footsteps.

I see the curtain surrounding me pulled back.

She comes right over to my side, takes my burned hand in hers, gently pats my bald, raw head.

“Hi, baby,” she says, a smile on her face.

I look at my mom. Tears that I didn’t even realize I was holding back begin falling down my cheeks. “Mommy,” I say, my voice shaking in fear. “Am I going to die?”

I know it’s bad. And I so much want her warm encouragement. I want her to brush my fears away. I want to be cuddled and comforted with hope and reassurance. I want her to kiss it all away as only Mom can.

I wait for the promise that she’ll take care of everything. She always does.

She always does.

Mom clasps my hand gently in hers.

She looks into my eyes.

Gathers her thoughts.

And asks, “John, do you want to die? It’s your choice, not mine.”

Three summers before the fire I was at a neighborhood swimming pool.

It was the kind of Midwest, July afternoon perfect for swimming. High humidity. Brutal heat. Blazing sun. Absolutely perfect!

The water was packed with kids and the deck jammed with parents. I was a couple of weeks from turning seven, was just learning how to swim, and loved my newfound independence. That’s right, no more floaties for me!

But overconfidence can be deadly.

It caused me to get too close to the deep-end edge. My head was bobbing just above water as I bounced along the bottom of the pool, and then all of a sudden, I slid as if I were on ice. The gentle-sloping floor dropped off rapidly into the deep end of the pool. Nothing was underneath my feet. I lost my footing. I was sinking.

I slid all the way to the bottom. I didn’t even try to move my arms or kick my legs. I’m not sure if I knew it was hopeless to try or if I knew someone would come for me. But I just sat there on the bottom of the pool.

Looking up.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Expecting.

Knowing.

Then the water broke open above me and a person quickly grabbed me, brought me to the surface, pulled me to the side of the pool, and I was out of the water. I looked up to see my savior, squinting my eyes in the sun.

It was my mom.

She’d jumped in fully clothed and pulled me out of the water.

She saved my life that day.

She just dried me off, wrapped herself with the towel, got me a Popsicle, took off her waterlogged watch, and moved on. She showed me that day and on innumerable other occasions she would be there for me. She would save me. I just had to reach out my hand to her.

So on the day I was burned, as she held my hand, and I asked if I was going to be okay, I already knew what she would do and the words she would speak.

“Baby, you are fine. We’ll get you home today. If you are brave I’ll get you a milk shake on the way home. All you need to think about right now is if you want chocolate or vanilla.”

I wanted the milk shake promise!

Instead, I got this: “John, do you want to die? It’s your choice, not mine.”

Hold up. WHAT?

What kind of question is that to ask a scared little boy in an emergency room!?
SINK OR SWIM
You may be thinking that my mom was the coldest, most callous parent of all time.

I’m not going to argue with you on that point.

I mean, who doesn’t offer his or her little boy, dying in a hospital bed, some love and encouragement? What kind of woman could be so absolutely indifferent and standoffish? Didn’t she know that this poor little fella just wanted a little hope?

But what was it that I needed?

Because in retrospect, that was exactly what she delivered.

I remember looking up at her and responding, “I do not want to die. I want to live.”

She answered, “Then, John, you need to fight like you’ve never fought before. You need to take the hand of God, and you need to walk this journey with Him. Race forward with everything you have. Daddy and I will be with you every step of the way. But, John, you listen to me: you need to fight for it.”

You need to fight for it.

Before that day, I was a typical nine-year-old kid. I shirked responsibility and seldom owned my actions, and even less frequently the resulting effects. I cleaned my room because I had to. I did homework because they made me. I went to church because they told me to.

My parents were in charge.

I followed.

They gave me everything I needed and I happily accepted all of it. I was a bit�.�.�. entitled.

I was the fourth born to parents who loved one another. They also adored all six of their kids.

I lived in a beautiful house.

I had a father who worked, a mother who stayed home.

I lived in a safe neighborhood.

Went to a great school.

We had church on Sundays, blueberry pancakes afterward, and fried chicken at Grandma’s in the evening.

We even owned a golden retriever.

We had it all.

Life was perfect.

And then life changed.

It always does.

When life changes in this way, we can beg and plead to go back to the way things were. Feeling entitled to that reality. Waiting for someone to wave the magic wand and put things back to normal; back to the way life was.

Or we can step up, recognize that it is time to move forward from here, and embrace total accountability and ownership over our lives.

Own your life, John.

Fight for it.

It’s your choice.

Not mine.

Mom’s response demanded ownership. No more entitlement, no more shirking responsibility. She gave me truth.

Reflecting on it today, I see Mom’s question was an inflection point—a moment in time that changes everything that follows.

That day, when it mattered most, I was teetering on the brink of death. Mom courageously walked to the edge of the cliff and looked over it with me. It wouldn’t take much for me to give up, let go, and fall down into the abyss.

But there was an alternative path, a way forward. She pointed away from the cliff. In the other direction was a huge mountain. It looked impossible to climb. But she said that I could do it. That I could choose to turn away from the edge and take small, shuffling steps, up the hill, back to life.

We all have that choice. We choose to vibrantly go about life, soak it up, embrace it, and celebrate it, or we choose not to. No one else can make this decision for us.

We get one life.

We either choose to live.

Or we choose to die.
DO YOU WANT TO DIE?
By all accounts, I should not have survived the fire.

After enduring several minutes engulfed in flames, I was burned on essentially 100 percent of my body.

Eighty-seven percent of my burns were third-degree.

The worst kind.

These burns were deep. They seared through the three layers of skin, through the muscle, and even all the way to the bone in places.

Burned skin will never grow back without donor skin. And, ironically, donor skin must come from the recipient’s body. Since all of my skin was burned, the only donor site that could be harvested was from the least badly burned part of my body, my scalp. It was a near impossible task.

In addition, my lungs were damaged by smoke inhalation. Controlling the core temperature of my body was difficult with no skin. Infections were likely.

Things were extraordinarily dire.

Today the mortality rate for burn patients is calculated by taking the percentage of the body burned and adding the age of the patient. So for me, almost three decades before many advances in burn treatment, the math worked like this: 100 percent of the body burned plus nine years of age equals absolutely no chance of survival.

The fire was a death sentence.

My mom didn’t know all of this when she walked into the hospital room that morning. She didn’t know much about how the fire started, what burn treatment consisted of, or what was to come next.

She didn’t know at that moment the coming agony of going to bed nightly wondering if her little boy would be alive when the next day arrived. She never imagined pacing the hospital floors at night, crying in lonely, darkened corners of the halls, or enduring the hours of agonized waiting through dozens of surgeries with her son’s life hanging in the balance.

All she knew—all we knew—was the fight was on.

Now, I feel obligated to tell you a secret and share some good news before we go on.

Spoiler alert: Don’t read the next sentence if you want to be surprised by the end of the book.

The boy lives.

Yep, while those moments I described in the hospital are heartbreaking, every parent’s worst nightmare, this book has a happy ending. Obviously, or you wouldn’t be reading these words!

But it wasn’t by accident.

I believe in the power of prayer. And I know thousands of prayers were offered up for me that night, and every day for the next five months I spent in the hospital. But I also believe that prayer is not so much intended to change God, but to inform and inspire the next steps of the individuals offering the prayer.

I survived because of the actions and encouragement of remarkable people by my side every step of the way, pushing me to fight, imploring me to believe, and empowering me to take ownership of my life.

And the little boy expected to die is now abundantly alive.

Today, I’ve been happily married for twelve years. My wife, Beth, and I have a strong marriage and four healthy, beautiful, and frequently rambunctious kids. Three boys and a girl. We live in an idyllic community, belong to an active church, and enjoy amazing lives.

This incredible life is the outgrowth of a daring question:

Do you want to die?

A bold question that reminds us that we hold the power to choose our path forward. We may not control everything that happens to us, but we always control how we respond.

Obviously my rash decision to play with fire was a huge inflection point.

I made a simple choice as a child. And in a moment my life, and the life of my family, would never be the same. There was no going back.

But that wasn’t the only inflection point we faced. Countless others came in its wake. Moments in time that changed everything afterward. The choices we made would lead either to a life of hope and possibility or a life of fear and regret.

We all make these choices throughout our lives.

I hope to open your eyes, to help you truly see which path you are choosing to go down. And to point you toward the one filled with possibility.

The first choice you must make to ignite a radically inspired life is to own your life. It is to leave entitlement behind and realize that it is up to you to make the changes in your life.

Stop making excuses.

This is your life.

Do you want to die?

No?

Good.

Then act like it.
NO MORE ACCIDENTS
One of my favorite movies is Good Will Hunting.

There’s a powerful scene where a seemingly brash, arrogant, know-it-all young man is in the midst of a deep conversation with his psychologist about his past. Eventually, the psychologist tells the troubled young man:

It’s not your fault.

It’s not your fault.

It’s not your fault!

This compelling scene is a pivotal moment in the movie. Embracing the freeing truth in those words would greatly benefit many of us in our lives.

Yet, my encouragement to you is quite different.

When my family and I recall the fire that changed our lives, we describe it as “John’s accident” or simply “the accident.” The term accident appears more than a dozen times in a book my mom and dad wrote about it called Overwhelming Odds.

Accident.

Let me ask you a question: What do you think happens when someone holds a flame to a can of gasoline?

Yup.

That’s not an accident: it’s a law of nature. It’s the result of holding a burning object to highly combustible fumes.

Yes, I was a child.

Yes, I had no idea what would happen.

And, yes, I certainly didn’t expect the massive explosion that took place, but to call it an accident cheapens my role in the event.

When my mom encouraged me that it was my choice whether I lived, she was doing something vitally important. She was challenging me to take full responsibility not only for what happened, but more important, for what would happen next. This was a defining inflection point for me. I had two choices�.�.�. take responsibility for my healing and fight forward, or believe someone else would save me and passively endure.

My mom knew that this was life and death, that I was on the edge of a cliff. That if I didn’t take the reins, I would fall into it and slip away. She knew that she could not make me do it. She understood that I needed to be accountable.

Accountability gets a bad rap these days. What do you think of when you think about accountability? Maybe you think of responsibilities, burdens, a weight you have to carry. Maybe you think of corporations that avoided accountability, that destroyed people’s lives and shrugged their shoulders afterward.

Unfortunately at times it feels like we live in a society that loves to shirk responsibility and expects others to swoop in and save the day.

Ah, but accountability not only keeps you from accidentally slipping backwards in life, it frees you to intentionally navigate the path forward. It gives you the power to take ownership of your life.
STOP SHRUGGING
Personal accountability is a prerequisite for any worthy achievement.

Several years ago I was fortunate to be asked to give an inspirational speech about how to rise above challenges in the real estate market to the Staubach Company, a real estate company started by former naval officer and great Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach. Over the following three decades it became hugely successful before Roger sold it for more than $600 million in 2008.

I flew to Dallas to speak to a gathering of their senior-level leaders. When my taxicab pulled up to their headquarters, the young woman who’d organized the event greeted me at the door. I smiled and we chatted as we walked to the room where I would prepare before going onstage.

Although I had researched the background of the company and spoken to several of the event’s organizers, I thought I would take this chance to ask this woman what she felt was most critical to the company’s long-standing success.

She paused as she poured me a cup of coffee.

She handed it to me.

And then said, “Well, there is this story that has become legend around here.”

She explained how Roger Staubach had famously demanded accountability from every employee at the firm. He had learned the importance of accountability as a naval officer, seen its value repeatedly on the football field, and knew it was essential to grow a business and a life.

She explained that he empowered each employee to run his or her own business, support one another, and to responsibly work through any issues that arose, both with clients and within his or her team.

It didn’t always go so smoothly.

One day two brokers approached Staubach unable to solve how to split a $16,000 commission. Each agent argued that the entire commission belonged to him. They’d been stuck in this argument for several days and finally went to their boss, threw up their hands, and said, “We can’t solve this. Can you fix this for us?”

Staubach asked a few questions.

Thanked the two brokers for sharing.

He asked if they could see any way past their grievances, see the other’s perspective and own a mutually beneficial outcome. They could not.

He asked if they would be willing to split the commission, recognizing that they both had done substantial work in securing the deal. They would not.

Staubach stood. He shook both their hands, thanked them for their work, and thanked them for their generosity.

He then legendarily took the entire commission and donated it to charity.

He wanted to let those brokers know that they would either be responsible for succeeding together, or be responsible for failing together. It was their choice.

No one else ever took such a complaint to the boss. Future problems were tackled as they occurred at the individuals’ level.

I thanked the woman for sharing that story. It helped me understand the culture of that company and what kind of leadership advice might be relevant. But that story extends well beyond business.

Can you think of a time when you were tempted to be like those brokers?

Have you at times in your life wanted to shrug your shoulders, throw up your hands, and look for someone else to solve your problems? It’s understandable to want to look outside yourself, to put the onus on other things or other people.

We frequently blame things outside of our control.

We point to situations: It’s not my fault. Traffic was bad. The markets stink. The world’s a mess.

We point to others: It’s not my fault. She is too difficult. My employees are idiots. My patients are needy. The commission is all mine.

But excuses get you nowhere.

Here’s my challenge: erase “It’s not my fault” from your vocabulary. Every time you feel it coming to the surface, about to roll off your tongue—stop. Say instead, “It’s my life and I’m responsible for it.”

This changes everything.

It’s my life and I’m responsible for it.

No one’s going to save you.

Accountability means you take ownership of your own life. Realize that you hold the keys to changing things, solving your problems, improving your life, and making a difference. And it’s not just about action and fixing. Accountability also provides the power to let things go, to surrender things you can’t change, to forgive events and people that have burned you in the past. It demands that we stop shrugging our shoulders, throwing up our hands, thinking that we can do nothing.

Your life provides the daily inflection points to stop looking outside yourself, to stop waiting for someone else to change, and to stop passively waiting for someone else to step forward.

This is your moment to choose to live.

To really live.

Own it.
PICK UP YOUR FORK
Have you ever experienced the joy of feeling that you finally made it?

Perhaps it was graduating school, landing your first job, or getting married. You worked, strove, labored, and achieved. You summited a mighty peak—and then discovered that the difficult part of your journey was just beginning?

For me that experience was coming home after being burned. I was nine years old, had just spent almost five months in the hospital, endured a couple of dozen surgeries, and lost my fingers to amputation. The painful experience of being away from family, facing continuous procedures, was finally over. The struggle was over; the celebration was on!

The hospital that had admitted me with no chance of surviving was now releasing me back to my family. I was now burned, scarred, bandaged, and wheelchair bound, but very much alive and grateful.

We pulled out of the parking lot, made the five-minute drive home, and turned onto our street. I was absolutely overwhelmed by the cars, fire trucks, balloons, and friends lining our subdivision.

Under an awning, a line formed of family, friends, classmates, neighbors, first responders, and community members welcoming us home. Music played and people cried.

The miracle had happened.

The boy lived.

Eventually, though, our friends went home, the cars pulled away, the front door shut, and we were left to decide how we’d move forward as a family.

That night Mom made my favorite meal: au gratin potatoes. (If you hadn’t figured it out yet, this likely just cemented it for you: I was a strange kid!) We sat around the kitchen table in our reconstructed house as a family for the first time since the night before the fire.

Dad and Mom sat at opposite ends of the table. Three of my sisters, Laura, Cadey, and Susan, lined one side, with my brother, Jim, my sister Amy, and me on the other. Our family had been through inconceivable trials over the preceding months.

We’d lost our house in the fire.

My siblings had lost their parents to their near-24/7 hospital vigil.

My brother and sisters, ranging in age from eighteen months to seventeen years old, had been split up, staying with friends and relatives until the house was rebuilt.

My parents almost lost their son.

I’d lost my fingers, the ability to walk, and was scarred from my neck to my toes.

And yet here we were.

We made it.

Home.

Together.

One family.

Changed.

Scarred.

Transformed.

And alive.

We were back to eating dinner, cleaning up spilled milk and worrying about elbows on the table. Life would return to normal. But undoubtedly, a miracle had occurred. So tonight we celebrated.

The food looked delicious. I closed my eyes and smelled the cheesy goodness. Then opened them and realized�.�.�. I couldn’t eat anything. Because of wrappings, splints, and my inability to hold a fork, I could not partake in my celebration meal. I stared at my plate, not sure what to do.

My sister Amy saw me struggling. So she thoughtfully grabbed my fork, speared a few potatoes, and elevated them toward my mouth.

Then I heard it.

“Put that fork down, Amy. If John is hungry, he’ll feed himself.”

I turned my head toward my mom.

What did she just say?

Put that fork down?

He’ll feed himself?

What the heck, Mom? Haven’t I already been through enough? Are you kidding me? I’m hungry and I can’t eat!

That night I cried at the table. I got mad at my mom. I told her I could not do it, that it wasn’t fair, and I’d been through enough. The night quickly shifted from celebration and laughter to upheaval and contention.

The party was over.

Mom ruined it all.

Yet that night also created another inflection point for a nine-year-old boy. As my siblings cleared their plates and my hunger and anger mounted, I wedged the fork between what remained of my two hands. My fingers had been amputated just above the bottom knuckles. Because the skin had still not entirely healed, my hands were wrapped in thick gauze. I looked like a boxer, fighting to get a fork between two boxing gloves.

It was painstakingly slow.

The fork repeatedly fell out of my grasp.

But eventually, I awkwardly stabbed at the potatoes, brought them to my mouth, and chewed them.

And stared angrily at my mom.

I was mad.

My hands throbbed.

She’d ruined my night.

I hated her.

But I was eating.

Looking back on it, I see what a courageous stand my Mom took. It must have been extremely painful for her to sit with the entire family watching her little guy. How much easier and seemingly more loving it would have been to just feed me those darn potatoes and bring out the ice-cream cake.

How much easier it is in life to not do—or to make others do—the hard stuff.

Easier to take a picture of the family with everybody smiling at the dinner table, a little kid in a wheelchair at the end, post on Facebook, and write, “Back to normal! We’re all home and doing great!”

Mom wasn’t worried about what others thought.

She wasn’t concerned about Photoshopping the moment.

Mom utilized this moment as a reminder that others would be there to encourage, to serve, to love me. But this was still my fight, this was still my life. It might be ripe with challenges, but it was also my opportunity to realize that none of those obstacles would be insurmountable.

This moment was just the beginning of many times when I would have to find a way. She forced me to pick up my fork. And I’m completely convinced I would not be living the life I am today if she hadn’t.

The day I was burned, she challenged me to choose not to die.

Inspiring Lessons

ON FIRE is a book of extremes. I admit I cried reading this book. The story starts with John as a young boy. He sees some other kids playing with gasoline and matches. It looks like a lot of fun: "Just like the older boys, I wanted to make the flame dance." You can guess what happens next to John. This part of the book is painful to read--honestly, I could hardly bear to read his account.

Rescued, barely, John's recovery experience in the hospital is as bad as you might imagine. Perhaps the worst part is the "broom closet." That's where the burn therapists wheeled John when they worked on moving his knees. He screamed so badly that they wanted to give him some privacy. John recalls that it was "the most acutely painful experience in my life." However, it was in that broom closed that John learned a lesson about growth--if there is no movement, there is no progress. So it was in that small broom closet where John learned another important lesson. That lesson the author calls, Choice # 5: "Refuse to become stagnant by purposefully growing and intentionally stretching in every area of life."

And so, John O'Leary presents these 7 Life Choices, learned in a fashion that none of us would want to learn. Although most of these choices came from the author's horrific childhood accident, some of the ideas came from inspiring figures the author met as an adult. One inspiring figure was a professional announcer, who had simply made the choice of living a life of SIGNIFICANCE, rather than fame.

ALL of the choices in ON FIRE are serious ideas, and worth pondering.

So all in all, I found ON FIRE to be a moving, sobering book. The stories are real, and the lessons are as real as the stories.

Amazing perspective!

What an amazing story! Yes, this is the story of a 9 year old boy who survived overwhelming odds. But, even more, it is a book about resilience, inner strength, and perspective. The life lessons that John O'Leary interweaves into the story of his survival are the stories that propel each and every one of of us in the moments of fight or flight. This inspiring book can be applied to any person's life. We can all relate to the journey he has been on. And we can all relate to his humor, his family, and his down-to-earth attitude. What a truly extraordinary book!

The deepest of soul work

When I was a kid, my best friends cousins lived across the street from John. The story of John even surviving is a miracle. As a high school kid, John hung out with all the nice, good boys. He would frequent all the hot spots we high schoolers appeared at. John always had a smile on his face and a great attitude.
Not having the intimacy with John's story because we were awkward, same age peers, it's so awesome to be a witness to John's past story, his current story, and absolutely love the future he is creating for himself. John, you deserve every ounce of goodness that comes your way! Thank you for doing the deepest of soul work and bring strong enough to carry your message world wide!
