Human Longevity: Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Bioenergetics, Molecular Biology, and Evolution, by Raymond C. Valentine, David L. Valentine

More than 7 billion people inhabit the earth and all of them are subject to aging. This book is aimed at persons interested in a molecular explanation of how our cells age. Human Longevity: Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Bioenergetics, Molecular Biology, and Evolution is built on the proposition that we age as our mitochondria age. It suggests a revised version of Harman’s famous hypothesis featuring mitochondrial oxidative and energy stresses as the root causes of aging.

Human cells are protected from the ravages of aging by a battery of defensive systems including some novel mechanisms against membrane oxidation introduced in this book. This concept is consistent with recent discoveries showing that mitochondria-targeted antioxidants prevent Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain disease in animal models of neurodegeneration.

This book explores a unified theory of aging based on bioenergetics. It covers a variety of topics including an introduction to the science of human aging, the Darwinian selection of membranes enabling longevity, a revised mitochondrial membrane hypothesis of aging, and various mechanisms that protect human mitochondrial membranes, thereby enabling longevity.

Popular Resistance in Palestine: A History of Hope and Empowerment, by Mazin B. Qumsiyeh

The Western media paint Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation as exclusively violent: armed resistance, suicide bombings, and rocket attacks. In reality these methods are the exception to what is a peaceful and creative resistance movement. In this fascinating book, Dr Mazin Qumsiyeh synthesises data from hundreds of original sources to provide the most comprehensive study of civil resistance in Palestine.

The book contains hundreds of stories of the heroic and highly innovative methods of resistance employed by the Palestinians over more than 100 years. The author also analyses the successes, failures, missed opportunities and challenges facing ordinary Palestinians as they struggle for freedom against incredible odds. This is the only book to critically and comparatively study the uprisings of 1920-21, 1929, 1936-9, 1970s, 1987-1991 and 2000-2006.

The compelling human stories told in this book will inspire people of all faiths and political backgrounds to chart a better and more informed direction for a future of peace with justice.

Review
"This is a timely and remarkable book written by the most important chronicler of contemporary popular resistance in Palestine. Mazin Qumsiyeh brilliantly evokes the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, Edward Said, Rachel Corrie and many others, to tell the unvarnished truth about Palestine and Zionist settler colonialism. With its focus on ‘history and activism from below’, this is a work of enormous significance. Developing further his original ideas on human rights in Palestine, media activism, public policies and popular, non-violent resistance, Mazin Qumsiyeh’s book is a must read for anyone interested in justice and how to produce the necessary breakthrough in the Israel-Palestine conflict." -- Nur Masalha, author of four books, including The Bible and Zionism (2007) and The Politics of Denial (2003)"Qumsiyeh’s inspiring accounts of both the everyday and the most extraordinary acts of Palestinian indigenous resistance to colonialism expose the misguided claims that Palestinians have never tried nonviolence; in fact, they are among the experts, whose courage, creativity, and resilience are an inspiration to people of conscience everywhere. Even with the arms of a military superpower, the Israeli government’s failure to quell the Palestinians’ spirit and insistence on human rights reminds us that the greatest strength of all belongs to those with justice on their side, who will ultimately triumph." -- Anna Baltzer, author of Witness in Palestine"Mazin Qumsiyeh’s insider’s chronicle of Palestinian civil resistance and its quest for self-reliance, independence, political rights, and self-liberation clearly shows that collective nonviolent action by Palestinians has been neither episodic nor an aberration, but remarkably consistent and for nearly a century. His sweeping account belongs on the bookshelves of Israelis who are fearful, Palestinians who are unsure of next steps, and a global community that has yet to take a meaningful stand for peace with justice. Anyone concerned about the future for all the peoples of the Middle East will take encouragement from his invigorating analysis." -- Mary Elizabeth King, author of A Quiet Revolution: The First Palestinian Intifada and Nonviolent Resistance

excellent book on the truth about what is happening in ...
By Greg Kemppainen
excellent book on the truth about what is happening in Palestine. seems like some zionist israeli jews have been the whipping boy of the world for so long, now they are turning all of their anger and resentment on the Palestinians, stealing their land, their natural resources and causing a holocaust in the West Bank and Gaza. Shipped fast, i would purchase it again!

Comprehensive, well researched, and well written...must read
By Christopher M. Whitman Jr.
The book is a new release by the Palestinian Professor and author Mazin Qumsiyeh of Bethlehem and Bir Zeit University. If one is a frequent viewer of RamallahRamallah Yahoo group or various alternative news outlets such as MondoWeiss you may have read something by him. He has recently returned to Palestine after giving a multi-week speaking tour in Europe and the United States talking about his book.

As a preface I believe his book is important for a few reasons. The first being it is written by a Palestinian Professor who lives in Palestine. This may seem like a moot point but being a student at a Zionist university you are told there are no "true" Arab (especially Palestinian) authors. Meaning as I was told in a class with a guest lecturer Avraham Sela, "All Arabs that live in Arab countries are inherently unable to write a non-biased history, they always feel the need to glorify their leader and blame Israel." Now granted if anyone started off a sentence with "All Jews..." they would immediately be cut off and called anti-semitic, but making blanket statements about 350 million people of which he has met maybe a thousand in his life is halal. Not that I believed this blanket statement, but the point is that it is taught like this. Also I believe his book is very important because it is not of the usual history people refer to when they say resistance, especially referring to Arabs or Palestinians. There are countless books about Palestinian "infiltration" after 1948 and many more about Fedayeen and initial sabotage missions carried out post 1967. This book deals with neither is a fresh recount of the peaceful nature of the resistance of Palestinians against a colonial settler movement/state.

His book describes popular resistance (as he terms to be a non-violent resistance against an oppressor) displayed by Palestinians since the outbreak of the Zionist movement. His focus is mostly pre-Israel but also has very revealing chapters involving Palestinian Israeli resistance under the military government (1948-1966), post 1967 resistance, and First Intifada resistance. He sources many foreign and Arabic sources to document the intelligentsia resistance to Zionism in the form of leaflets, strikes, etc before and during the mandate. In addition he documents various methods used by Palestinians to resist against the partitioning of their land and the brutal tactics used before during the Mandate to crush any form of resistance to British/Zionist rule. He also goes against traditional history to describe the ways Muslim and Christian organizations worked together to resist Zionist colonization throughout the history of Zionism from 1882-present day. His detailed analysis of the First Intifada being a mode of popular resistance to be emulated is a refreshing account of the solidarity Palestinians faced and could be a future mode of popular resistance, as opposed to the Second Intifada that after a brutal and deadly crack down by Israel resulted in the death of thousands of people.

Mazin Qumsiyeh overall writes a very thorough and well documented account of non-violent Palestinian (and later with individual international and Israeli support) resistance to the fourth most powerful military in the world with minimal symbolic help from the outside world. He spends his last chapters describing the possibility of building a movement based off of lessons learned from the past in Palestine and other regions. Towards the end like any theoretical book it gets a tid lofty and less substantive but what book on the subject of popular resistance would not be. Overall a great read from cover to cover and a recommended read for anyone interested in the subject. Anyone can purchase the book on Amazon as it just got there or if they are in Palestine can get the book in any alternative book store. A solid 9.5/10.

Resistance against Israeli Occupation
By Dr. Ludwig Watzal
Palestinian resistance against an Israeli "belligerent occupation" is mostly viewed as terrorism and rocket attacks. The brutal violence that was inflicted upon the Palestinian people by the Israeli occupation force is mostly ignored by the West. The most what the Western politicians are doing, is recommending the Palestinian to abstain from using violence, ignoring Israel`s forty-five-year-old occupation and colonization of another people. For them, popular resistance seems immoral or unnecessary.

The late Israeli professor of sociology at the Hebrew University, Baruch Kimmerling, wrote on March 27, 2001 in the Israeli daily "Haaretz": "Since 1967, millions of Palestinians have been under a military occupation, without any civil rights with, and most lacking even the most basic human rights. The continuing circumstances of occupation and repression give them, by any measure, the right to resist that occupation with any means at their disposal and to rise up in violence against that occupation. This is a moral right inherent to natural law and international law."

Mazin B. Qzmsiyeh teaches at Bethlehem University and Birzeit University and works for a number of civil organizations. He received his Ph. D from Texas Tech University. He did his postdoctoral training at St. Jude Children Research Hospital and the University of Tennessee (included Clinical Fellowship). He published extensively in areas ranging from Zoology to Genetics. He serves as chairman of the board of the Palestinian Center for Rapprochement between People and coordinator of the Popular Committee against the Wall and Settlements in Beit Sahour. Besides this book, his political writing includes "Sharing the Land of Canaan: Human rights and the Israeli/Palestinian Struggle.

The author writes the history of popular resistance in Palestine beginning with the Ottoman rule, continuing during the Zionist build-up from 1917 to 1935, the great Arab revolt of 1936 to 1939, the devastation to the Nakba (the catastrophe) from 1939 to 1948, from the Nakba to the occupation of the whole of Palestine in 1967, via the period of the so-called peace process to the current Boycotts, Divestments and Sanctions campaign (BDS).

Qumsiyeh writes that by examining the Palestinian situation, everyone will recognize that there are no examples of completely nonviolent struggle for freedom from colonial occupation. "I cannot think of a single historical precedent where the struggle for rights was waged solely by violent means or solely by nonviolent means. It seems that history of human struggle is a mix of both to varying degrees." (21) International law recognizes the right to resists an occupation authority.

The Israeli colonization of Palestinian land cannot be permanently maintained without ideological and material support from outside. The U. S. government, pro-Israeli pressure groups and the European Union give billions of dollars and Euros to Israel, used inter alia for building colonies on occupied land or are invested in the military sector. The BDS campaign, which Qumsiyeh strongly supports, brings these facts to the fore and attempts to induce governments, churches and private investors to restrain from investments in a country that has been occupying, oppressing and colonizing another people for the last 45 years.

The author is optimistic that this form of popular resistance will bear fruit in the long run. This book refutes the claims that Palestinians never tried nonviolence. It would make more sense to ask the Israel military to restrain its violence and use nonviolent means to deal with the resistance. Qumsiyeh's history of popular resistance in Palestine should be read by everyone who is opposed to colonialism and foreign domination.

Dr. Ludwig Watzal, works as a journalist and editor in Bonn, Germany.

The Geography of Tourism and Recreation: Environment, Place and Space, by C. Michael Hall, Stephen J. Page

Highlighting the inter-relationships between tourism, leisure and recreation, this revised edition introduces growing theoretical debates (from geography and the wider social science arena) to assess how new conceptualizations of tourism and leisure are advancing knowledge and understanding.

Underpinning this book is the concept of the evolving nature of geography and social science, and their role in leading the analysis of the leisure phenomenon as a living subject, which has recently seen significant contributions from the new cultural geographies of consumption and leisure. These developments are clearly introduced, giving readers new to the subject area bite-sized introductions to key issues.

Whilst this third edition retains the successful format and structure of previous editions, making it attractive and user-friendly to students without being overwhelming, it is completely revised and redeveloped to accommodate new case studies, insights, summary points and learning objectives. It is the only book to systematically compare and contrast in a spatial context, tourism and recreation in relation to leisure time, and its encyclopaedic reference section provides an excellent resource for new students. Retaining a global focus, this edition now features a greater emphasis on North America, and investigates the importance of less developed countries and the critical issues surrounding inequality, exploitation, underdevelopment and globalization as powerful forces affecting tourism and leisure.

Globalization: A Very Short Introduction, by Manfred Steger

Globalization has become one of the defining buzzwords of our time--a term that describes a variety of complex economic, political, cultural, ideological, and environmental forces that are rapidly altering our experience of the world. In the years since World War II, we have seen national boundaries fade as financial markets, manufacturing concerns, information services, and cultural products (including movies, music, and television shows) have spread around the earth. Immigration and tourism have exploded, Japanese cars are assembled in the United States and American hamburgers are sold in Toyko. And the Internet connects virtually everyone on the planet who owns a computer. We are indeed now living in a borderless world.
In clear, accessible language, Manfred B. Steger goes beyond a narrow economic focus to cover all the major causes and consequences of globalization as well as the hotly contested question of whether globalization is, ultimately, a good or a bad thing. This new edition has been fully updated for 2009 to include recent developments in global politics and the impact of terrorism and it expands the discussion of environmental issues, devoting an entirely new chapter to this key topic. The book also examines political movements both for and against globalization, from WTO protests to the recent rise in global jihadism; considers such concepts as "Americanization" and "McDonaldization"; and explores the role of the media and communication technologies in the process of cultural globalization. Finally, Steger explains in accessible language the connection between economic globalization and multinational corporations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization.
Including maps, diagrams, figures, textboxes, and a timeline, this compact book provides a wealth of information on one of the key new forces in the modern world.

About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

The Oxford Handbook of Music and Disability Studies (Oxford Handbooks)From Oxford University Press

The Oxford Handbook of Disability Studies represents a comprehensive state of current research for the field of Disability Studies and Music. The forty-two chapters in the book span a wide chronological and geographical range, from the biblical, the medieval, and the Elizabethan, through the canonical classics of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, up to modernist styles and contemporary musical theater and popular genres, with stops along the way in post-Civil War America, Ghana and the South Pacific, and many other interesting times and places. Disability is a broad, heterogeneous, and porous identity, and that diversity is reflected in the variety of bodily conditions under discussion here, including autism and intellectual disability, deafness, blindness, mobility impairment often coupled with bodily difference, and cognitive and intellectual impairments. Amid this diversity of time, place, style, medium, and topic, the chapters share two core commitments. First, they are united in their theoretical and methodological connection to Disability Studies, especially its central idea that disability is a social and cultural construction. Disability both shapes and is shaped by culture, including musical culture. Second, these essays individually and collectively make the case that disability is not something at the periphery of culture and music, but something central to our art and to our humanity.

Healing Elements: Efficacy and the Social Ecologies of Tibetan Medicine, by Sienna R. Craig

Tibetan medicine has come to represent multiple and sometimes conflicting agendas. On the one hand it must retain a sense of cultural authenticity and a connection to Tibetan Buddhism; on the other it must prove efficacious and safe according to biomedical standards. Recently, Tibetan medicine has found a place within the multibillion-dollar market for complementary, traditional, and herbal medicines as people around the world seek alternative paths to wellness. Healing Elements explores how Tibetan medicine circulates through diverse settings in Nepal, China, and beyond as commercial goods and gifts, and as target therapies and panacea for biophysical and psychosocial ills. Through an exploration of efficacy – what does it mean to say Tibetan medicine “works”? – this book illustrates a bio-politics of traditional medicine and the meaningful, if contested, translations of science and healing that occur across distinct social ecologies.

The transitions of modern medical practice in the Himalaya and Tibetan China
By Steve Craig
This excellent, accessible, yet scholarly book is comprised primarily of a series of abbreviated biographies that chronicle the unique and unusual difficullties affecting the practice of traditional medicine in Tibet proper, the Tibetan Autonomous Kingdoms in Nepal, and the Tibetan diaspora. Given the size of China' population, one is struck by the amazingly nuanced an layered approach to a health care system that in ways provides more compassionate access to healing arts than modern Europe and the Americas does to it's citizens. The book also provides a very vivid and well written portrait of the slight of hand, good introns, and obstacles the Chinese equivalent of the Federal DEA puts before the struggling Tibetans as they attempt to adapt to the 'new China-old China' of chronic invasive over-management of traditional arts. And methods of healing as they are pit through the strange mirages of due diligence, Cinese-style. The portrait of Tibetan challenges from China's system of Tibetan reduction and domination is illuminating, balanced, and In a subtle and non-judgmental way sets out clearly one of the challenges to cultural survival with which time tans must deal in the New China. As well written but of more scholarly orientation than her last book, Horses Like Lightening, this effort is essential to a better understanding of the modern Tibet within China than more romanticized versions of portraits of modernization in Tibet.

Read for class - Very dry
By JK
There was clear effort put into the writing and researching of this book. It was, however, a very dry academic text. The story jumps around a lot, and I had a hard time keeping interested and clear. I would not recommend this book unless you are very interested in medical anthropology or are required to pick it up.

The Underground Is Massive: How Electronic Dance Music Conquered America, by Michaelangelo Matos

Joining the ranks of Please Kill Me and Can’t Stop Won’t Stop comes this definitive chronicle of one of the hottest trends in popular culture—electronic dance music—from the noted authority covering the scene.

It is the sound of the millennial generation, the music “defining youth culture of the 2010s” (Rolling Stone). Rooted in American techno/house and ’90s rave culture, electronic dance music has evolved into the biggest moneymaker on the concert circuit. Music journalist Michaelangelo Matos has been covering this beat since its genesis, and in The Underground Is Massive, charts for the first time the birth and rise of this last great outlaw musical subculture.

Drawing on a vast array of resources, including hundreds of interviews and a library of rare artifacts, from rave fanzines to online mailing-list archives, Matos reveals how EDM blossomed in tandem with the nascent Internet—message boards and chat lines connected partiers from town to town. In turn, these ravers, many early technology adopters, helped spearhead the information revolution. As tech was the tool, Ecstasy—(Molly, as it’s know today) an empathic drug that heightens sensory pleasure—was the narcotic fueling this alternative movement.

Full of unique insights, lively details, entertaining stories, dozens of photos, and unforgettable misfits and stars—from early break-in parties to Skrillex and Daft Punk—The Underground Is Massive captures this fascinating trend in American pop culture history, a grassroots movement that would help define the future of music and the modern tech world we live in.

From the Back Cover

What started as an underground party business—run and dominated by youths and hustlers—grew into the music business's greatest and biggest success. The Underground Is Massive is the first-ever big-picture history of the American electronic dance music underground, viewed through the lens of nineteen parties over thirty years—from the black, gay underground clubs of Chicago and Detroit's elite teen-party scene through nineties "electronica" to today's EDM-festival juggernaut, the book takes in the rise of the Internet and Burning Man, 9/11, and the collapse of the record business—and vividly charts why and how it took nearly three decades after electronic dance music became a global youth soundtrack for it to hit big in the land that birthed it.

Through unparalleled insider access to anecdotes, interviews, and history, Michaelangelo Matos demystifies how what once belonged to a devoted audience of casual partiers and diehard dancers has become America's soundtrack of choice and changed the music industry completely. Matos expertly tackles the vast diversity of EDM's musical landscape, its technologically prophetic yet illicit origins, and the path by which underground raves grew into fiercely successful music festivals. Taking in legendary artists from Frankie Knuckles to Moby as well as the biggest names in EDM—Diplo, Skrillex, Deadmau5, David Guetta, Tisto, and Daft Punk—Matos's deep mix of sources and wide-lens overview of the culture make every chapter a page-turning revelation.

About the Author

Michaelangelo Matos writes regularly for Rolling Stone, Red Bull Music Academy Magazine, and NPR. The author of an acclaimed volume (about Prince’s Sign ‘O’ the Times) in Bloomsbury’s 33 1/3 series, he lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

this will give a glimpse of what it was like.
By Chris K
United States pop culture has had a very different view of dance music than the rest of the world. Despite it's origins in this country and despite being about the same age as hip-hop, the many variants of electronic music have never really broken through to the mainstream, until recently. Now every major festival seems to have an EDM element to it even if it's not entirely dedicated to the sound. Matos takes us from the roots of the sound and the parties up to some of the most recent festivals, introducing us along the way to many of the movers, shakers and originators that got us to this point. Maybe you were at one of the parties documented, or one similar, you'll be transported back to the dancefloor. You'll hear the beat of the songs mentioned, and feel that familiar shiver up your spine remembering the first time a track really touched you. Maybe you've never been to a rave, festival or nightclub where this music lives, but heard about this counter culture, this will give a glimpse of what it was like.

Don’t let the EDM subtitle dissuade you; essential reading for 1980s/1990s techno heads
By Jason Birchmeier
I'd put off reading this book for a while because of the "EDM" subtitle, "How Electronic Dance Music Conquered America." Call me old fashioned (or simply old), but I don’t care for the Skrillex/Deadmau5 generation of music. I like my dance music spun on vinyl w/ two turntables and a mixer. I come from the Detroit/Berlin school of techno and the Chicago/New York school of house, where the DJ doesn’t jump around on stage and act like a rock star. Needless to say, the subtitle of the book alone made me tentative about reading it. I’d enjoyed one of Michaelangelo Matos’ books before, however, his 33 1/3 book about Prince’s Sign of the Times, so I thought I’d give this new book of his a chance. After all, it’s not often a book of this scope comes along. Dan Sicko’s Techno Rebels had been published back in 1999. While still required reading for Detroit techno heads, the stories in that book have since been told time and time again. Simon Reynolds’ Energy Flash (aka Generation Ecstasy) is another touchstone, but it too has gone out of date. I tried reading it again recently, and the glamorization of Ecstasy there is off-putting, not to mention the championing of sub-sub-niche genres specific to the U.K. that anyone under age 30 has probably never heard of and never will. The other touchstone book in the “techno” cannon is Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, a great book but, again, focused on the distant past and New York-centric.

Now along comes The Underground Is Massive, which spans the early Chicago/Detroit scene of the 1980s to the EDM era, wrapping up w/ Daft Punk’s Grammy win in 2014. The chapters are centered on specific events in history, generally a club, rave, or festival that ushered in a new era. The three chapters centered on Detroit – the Music Institute, November 24, 1989; Richie Hawtin’s Spastik party, August 13, 1994; and Detroit Electronic Music Festival, May 26-29, 2000 – were of particular interest to me. I was thrilled to see all the interviews that Matos drew from, particularly Rob Theakston and Joshua Glazer, two of the most bleeding-heart techno guys out there. As someone who was there (for the mid- to late ‘90s, at least), I can tell you that this is very much the true story, the Detroit part at least. Matos spoke to the right people, researched the right archives (i.e., the Hyperreal.org mailing lists were vital back in the day), and focuses on the right events. Plus, he rattles off discograpical information left and right – probably too much so for casual fans who don’t know Carl Craig from Derrick May, or Richie Hawtin from Plastikman, but on the other hand, record collectors and DJs should take notes while reading, as there's wealth of information here. The appendix of DJ mixes itself is reason enough to keep this book on your shelf for reference. In the end, these three aforementioned chapters alone prove to be essential reading for Detroit techno historians.

Of course, not everyone is into Detroit techno – precious few, in fact. As for those looking for the “EDM” angle as teased in the book’s subtitle, I suspect they may be disappointed to discover that the term doesn’t even come up until chapter 17 (page 340 of 382 in my Kindle edition), Electric Daisy Carnival, 2011. I must say, this pleased me (the glossing over of "trance" too). I’d read every page of the book to this point, and I wasn’t about to stop, so I pushed forward to the end. I’m glad I did because I understand the EDM phenomenon better now. Can’t say I’m itching to listen to Skrillex, but at least I have a better concept of why he’s as popular as he is. In any event, it was my sense that these last few chapters differ from the rest of the book. For one, the discographical minutia goes out the window. Matos breezes through post-2010 history (if it even counts as “history” yet) at a much faster clip than he does earlier in the book, and at times, there is a hint of dismissiveness. For instance, Daft Punk circa ’96 are framed as game-changing, whereas Daft Punk circa ’14 are framed with considerably less reverence. My sense was that this post-2010 part of the book wasn’t Matos’ favorite part either but rather the book publisher’s. In 2015, "EDM" is the new "electronica"; "techno" and "house" are passe, the province of old-school curmudgeons. In fairness to Matos, he uses the Introduction to pretty much say, this is my book (i.e., my subjective take on the subject matter), and if you don’t like it, write your own because I can only fit so much in this one. Hopefully others are motivated to take up the challenge because you can't please everyone w/ books like this -- too much music out there to cover in a 400-page book and tastes vary from region to region.

I enthusiastically recommend The Underground Is Massive to anyone curious about the 1980s/1990s, especially anyone interested in the Chicago, Detroit, New York, and California scenes – or the Midwest raves scene, which gets far more attention here than I’ve ever seen elsewhere. The late-'90s "electronica" era also gets a fair examination, Moby in particular. Don’t let the EDM subtitle dissuade you; this is a history book for house/techno heads. Personally, I would have liked to see more discussion of the Detroit-Berlin connection. I suppose that’s another book, though (perhaps the recent Tresor oral history that to my knowledge hasn't been translated to English yet). Selfishly, I’d like to see even more exploration of the Detroit scene, more quotes from guys like Dean Major (i.e., Syst3m), dare I say “shady” guys who were major players but never really came out from the shadows, presumably because what they were doing wasn’t entirely legal (surprise, surprise). That’s another book I’d be keen to read some day, a behind-the-scenes oral history about the most legendary rave parties described in Matos' book, from the point of view of the promoters and DJs as well as the partiers and -- now this would be cool -- the police who had to go bust up those parties every weekend. Another angle might be the How Music Got Free approach, where the story is told from the perspective of a few choice insiders, some of whom were on the wrong side of the law. The chapter about Even Further '96 is kind of like that, and it's something of a horror show on several counts, a parent's worst nightmare. As we await further books like this, The Underground Is Massive is a valuable addition to the cannon, up there w/ Techno Rebels, Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, and antiquated or not, Energy Flash. I'm already looking forward to a revised, extended edition in a few years' time. This easily could have been double the length it is, probably triple if it were to drill down deeper into the post-2010 era.

Well written EDM history!
By Aldo Bender
The most comprehensive history of EDM and it's development in America I have come across to date. This is a must read for those who want to know how these music parties started and grew into the trendy scene it is today, wonderfully resourced and timely, it can also bring a smile to the faces of those of us who lived it.

With its stylish new package, updated information on the health and environmental benefits of insect eating, and breed-your-own instructions, this new edition ofThe Eat-a-Bug Cookbookis the go-to resource for anyone interested in becoming an entomological epicure.

For many Americans, eating a lowly insect is something you’d only do on a dare. But with naturalist and noted bug chef David George Gordon, bug-eating is fun, exciting, and downright delicious!

Now you can impress, enlighten, and entertain your family and friends with Gordon’s one-of-a-kind recipes. Spice things up at the next neighborhood potluck with a big bowl of Orthopteran Orzo—pasta salad with a cricket-y twist. Conquer your fear of spiders with a Deep-Fried Tarantula. And for dessert, why not try a White Chocolate and Wax Worm Cookie? (They’re so tasty, the kids will be begging for seconds!)

Today, there are more reasons than ever before to explore entomophagy (that’s bug-eating, by the way). It’s an environmentally-friendly source of protein: Research shows that bug farming reduces greenhouse gas emissions and is exponentially more water-efficient than farming for beef, chicken, or pigs. Mail-order bugs are readily available online—but if you’re more of a DIY-type, The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook includes plenty of tips for sustainably harvesting or raising your own.

Filled with anecdotes, insights, and practical how-tos, The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook is a perfect primer for anyone interested in becoming an entomological epicure.

Who Eats Bugs?

Entomophagy (pronounced en-tuh-MOFF-a-gee)—that’s bug eating to you—has been practiced for many centuries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and North, South, and Central America. And the feasting continues according to Marcel Dicke, professor of entomology at Wageningen University and winner of the Dutch version of the Nobel Prize, with an estimated 80 percent of the world’s population eating bugs. Insects and their kin are enjoyed nearly everywhere except for Europe and the United States and Canada. That’s right: we’re the weirdos for not eating bugs.

It’s hard to say what motivated some of our forefathers to refrain from this widespread, nutritionally beneficial, and unquestionably wholesome practice. Quite possibly, our current disdain for bug cuisine was shared by the first farmers of northern Europe and, by extension, European colonists in the New World. They regarded most land arthropods, and insects in particular, as crop- and livestock-robbing pests. To these early agronomists, eating bugs was probably akin to sleeping with the enemy.

To discourage anyone from going over to the “other side,” they manufactured all manner of bad press for bugs. Hundreds of years later, fear-mongering pest control companies took the insect hate ball and ran with it. In their eyes, the only good bug was a dead one. Nowadays, most people in Europe and North America regard insects and other land arthropods as unclean, germ-laden, and foul tasting—three views that have little, if any, basis in fact.

Many of the world’s indigenous people still harvest and eat bugs, just as we do artichokes, oysters, and many of the myriad gifts from the land and sea. Did you know, for instance, that when faced with a cloud of locusts, native Algerians will break out the brooms and start sweeping their sudden bounty of insects into baskets and bags? Or that honey gatherers in Malaysia will sell the liquid bounty from a wild hive, but they’ll save any larval bees still in the honeycomb for themselves? How many of you have heard about the mopane worm business in rural South Africa? The fat, juicy caterpillars of the emperor moth are plucked from the mopane trees at Christmastime, after which they are gutted, dried, and sold at markets.

The first people of North America were avid bug eaters. I’ve read that members of the Klamath tribe of southeastern Oregon lit fires beneath trees to smoke out the caterpillars of the pandora moth, which would then fall to the forest floor, where the Klamath harvested them for later consumption. One chief is said to have amassed a ton and a half of smoked and dried pandora caterpillars during the summer of 1920.

“I have seen the Cheyennes, Snakes, Utes, etc., eat vermin off each other by the fistful,” wrote the nineteenth-century chronicler Father Pierre-Jean De Smet. “Often great chiefs would pull off their shirts in my presence without ceremony, and while they chatted, would amuse themselves with carrying on this branch of the chase in the seams. As fast as they dislodged the game, they crunched it with as much relish as more civilized mouths crack almonds and hazel-nuts or the claws of crabs and crayfishes.”

Although entomophagy may have fallen from favor among most of the members of North America’s founding tribes, it still thrives in the village markets of Oaxaca and a few other Mexican states. A favorite snack in these locations is chapulines, sun-dried grasshopper nymphs sprinkled with salt and seasoned with chile and lime. This delicacy, which originated with the native tribes of southwest Mexico, has been handed down from one generation to the next. The legacy of bug eating is also alive in the heart of Mexico City, where gourmet restaurants specializing in pre-Hispanic cuisine still offer cazuela de escamoles a la bilbaina—larval red ants, fried in olive oil and lightly dusted with dry red chile—to their discerning clientele.
